Quick query, just sorting the Eunos (g-reg) for an MOT. Couple of bulbs needed changing so all sorted except the middle brake light. Changed bulb still not working, no current. According to wiring diagrams off same fuse as the normal ones which work so presume the cabling to the boot has snapped. Do I need a working light for the MOT? If I remove bulb and wiring and the holder can I argue it's a reflector? Or would just covering with gaffa tape / removing the entire assembly get me the MOT and I can worry about fixing it later? Really keen to get it MOTd in expectation of some of the sun stuff. This is the car:

I'm not convinced it has to work, as people convert them to fogs.
Surely it's easy to join a wire to the brake lights in the boot and feed fresh wire to the light in the lid?

If the lense is there and visible, it has to work. My Roadmaster failed on having a non-operational third eye brake lamp, despite there being no internals or wiring to it.
Others more knowledgable will be able to tell you if covering it will get you through.

I had a Chrysler Neon fail an MOT on the third brake light not working (bulb) so assume it's a case of "if fitted must work".

As above, gotta work if fitted... also depending on the tester you might struggle with that rear plate too as from this angle it doesn't look like it uses the approved font so won't be BS marked.

At my last MOT refresher the way they put it was that if it was clearly a high level stop light, it had to work (or at least 50% of it if it has multiple elements) but if there was any doubt then it wasnt a high level stop light. I would remove the bulb holder and if possible the red lens then it cant be a stop light, can it.

If there is no wiring to the center stop lamp then its not testable.
No plate will also fail
I see that it has already got a rear fog lamp fitted . this should work with sidelights on and a warning lamp fitted

Cover in gaffa-tape. It's how my old scim got through MOTs with duff fog light. As above, if it's fitted, it MUST work. Unless it's covered over

its not an obligatory stop light, so if it doesnt work it 'shouldnt' fail ;D depends how the tester reads and interprets the manual, but it isnt a legally required light the number plate looks a tad odd, but being an import can get away with being that shape and size

I got a spare light and the wiring in northampton if you want it to work, yours for nowt if you want to come pick it up fella Thanks for offer, annoyingly I've spent evening making up a blank for the hole, then realised it looked rubbish and so have spent rest of evening making up a new lead and shrinkwrapping etc ready to fit tomorrow! It's a bit dark to look now, but seems i'll need to splice into the main loom on left side of boot where the old wiring joined the loom. It's passed MOT as is before but not in my ownership. Fog light has a warning although doesn't specifically say fog, just one of those generic rocker switches that lights up, think it may work indepently of the main lights, will need to get my 3 year old assistant to check! Rear plate is a fair point, and the front is stuck on the nose so probably not right for angle. May chance my arm on these two points.

Fitted new lead and lamp, peeled back the insulation on the loom on right side of boot to find a break in the wire, so could have fixed it all with one spliced wire. Ah well, all sorted now and new wiring should last a good few years. Thanks all for help.
