I've been trying to help out a friend. She has taken a running but bent conrod engine out a diesel passat and put another in which was a mixture of bits but the same she assures me.
I've had it running on brake cleaner so all the timing seems ok. Its getting fuel upto the high pressure pump? at the back of the engine ok from the in tank pump but just won't go.
Three things concern me. 1 the oil pressure switch isn't connected and flashes this up low pressure stop etc 2 when we tow it the rev counter still stays at zero 3 the maf sensor from the inlet trunking is missing as it was nicked from the holding yard.
I would have thought the rev counter should read at least? Any help gratefully received.

So theres no MAF fitted??
If so it'll prob be this, the brain doesn't know how much air is going in the engine so it won't know how much fuel to put in.
The rev counter will be electrical, so won't work unless the engine is running, just having the engine spinning while being towed won't work.
The oil pressure switch shouldn't be a problem, but the engine could be trying to protect it's self if it thinks it's got no oil pressure.
All the above is iirc tho.

Thanks. It was running without the maf or should that be map sensor on top of the engine with the bent conrod engine. I think I've answered my own post but I wonder if she has got the flywheel sensor correctly wired up? If it is a flywheel sensor or such for the engine speed. Must be somewhere and I bet that is wrong. Interestingly the fuel line from the filter to the high pressure pump has a one way valve in it. Yip she had that the wrong way round as well. Poor thing. Was mightily embarrased. Ps strange working with someone who smells of perfume on an engine. (I did say that to her and she laughed-not being sexist).

To be honest the pd can be a curse word of an engine to start after a while standing or diesel filter change etc.the widget thing regularly fails on them as well,in the end mine just wouldn't go,tried towing etc to no avail.I'd also snapped something with 4mm bolts on the top of the filter which I think held the widget in? Dropped it off at a mates a bit distraught and he ended up putting a focus diesel fuel filter on it,it ran spot on after that, started on the button everytime and was a huge improvement. The vw system is pants.

Also the maf thing was the original fault on mine as well, sort of!!!I'd noticed a bad split in the pipe going from it to the intake and removed it,swapped it with a good one but hadn't screwed the jubilee clip up tight.after changing the filter, the car started great but as soon as I give it a little rev,the pipe popped off and it ran like curse word for about 10 seconds.I tightened the clip up ok but it wouldn't start again, I started looking for the obvious, decided to put DERV in the filter bleed to prime it,broke the widget etc and had a little cry!!! So yeah, fix that first!!!!

Just a quick update.
Changed the crank sensor over and when turning over the rev counter went upto about 300rpm then after a few seconds fired up. So that's what it was. Crank sensor which makes sense as the rev counter wasn't indicating anything. Also had to suss out the fuel lines and the final one to the high pressure pump on the head? had a 1 way valve on it. Yip that was on the wrong way as well. Cheers anyway. I.
