I'm currently using an angle grinder with a wire brush attatchment to remove the paint out my XR2. This is only for interior/under bonnet use. done this much on pretty much a fresh brush and this has happened already, quite painful if you ask me is there a better method/attatchment for doing this? i've got quite a lot to do, it's all been painted black and it's not the best job, plus i've already uncovered at least 2 areas for welding that have been hidden by filler and underseal, so could do with getting the whole lot done and dusted. obviously taking it to a media blaster is best but i don't have the money/transport to do that, i want cost effective here ta in advance

You need proper twist knot wire brushes for the grinder. I find 75mm dia. cup brushes are best as you can get fairly near to corners. For flat areas, bevelled 100mm dia. twist knot brushes are best. Beware though, twist knot brushes are nasty spiteful little barstuards that just love to chuck out strands of wire at high speed. I use 1" cup brushes that go in your pistol drill to get into the tight spots. Good luck and don't forget your safety specs!

As has been said, always wear a full face mask and gloves. I wear a think pair of overalls. I had a twist wire brush disintegrate recently and was glad I was only pulling the strands of wire out of the overalls rather than my skin.
The other tool that is brilliant is a powerfile fitted with a ceramic belt. I'm currently using one on my Viva with good effect.
Very controllable, gets back to clean metal quickly, but doesn't take off more than you want and you can get into nooks and crannies easily.

I did the same job with a purple zip wheel attached to my drill. I bought that one because it had won a practical classics at the time. Looked barely worn by the time I had finished.

Strip-it discs are the best, they work many times faster than a wire brush and they don't scratch the steel underneath! As some others had mentioned above. The only problem is that if you hit a sharp edge they disintegrate very quickly. This kind of thing. 3M makes them, I use Josco ones which are Australian made, so probably not available in the UK. Quick post about them on mig-welding.co.uk www.mig-welding.co.uk/paint-stripping.htmI did the interior of my bug with them in no time. I don't have an in-progress pic handy, but this was the finished result.
