My advice, for what its worth, the rochester is a tricky carb to set up properly, if your confident, go for it, if not, buy something easier like i did with the edelbrock option, it honestly worked right out the box once i had made the cable brackets etc up to suit my car.

It needs rebuilt because its bleeding fuel like its had a drive by shooting. I reckon i may be lucky with just stripping and cleaning out the bowls, but it is so old looking a rebuilt may be a sensible option. I doubt any gasket will be reusable if i break into them.
i also have a crazy-tight budget at the moment, so rebuild rather than replace is the only choice of the 2.

OK, so do you know about the old quadrajet dissimilar metal corrosion and epoxy-ing the plugs in base so they don't leak (cos' they do when old)
if not google 'quadrajet' leaks and 'epoxy'

Hmm, that problem seems to be mostly manifested with fuel loss to engine. I have to say mine seems to be mostly coming from the pump lever on the top of the carb, and leaking to the outside rather than inside...

Its a GM quadrajet off a late 70's car i believe. Will bolt right on. Has had new gaskets etc. Seems to work, but i never tried it on the road, i just swapped to the edelbrock.

What sort of price? I ended up going for a stateside bought rebuild kit, and then ripping the carb apart today regardless. Will see how it performs but I'm bracing for the worst all round...

I hate taking carbs apart!
Always end up with springs flying out and dropping screws, ballache.

But the flip side is you earn 100 man points for putting it back together again correctly.
