i'm a big fan of this perana stuff ! the triple carb xr6 cortina's are called interceptors also have some other engine mods "The cortina XR6 interceptor was created in 1982. This car included modified exhaust headers, camshaft, cylinder heads, high compression pistons, a 3.08 differential and, most important, three 42 Webers. This very special car also boasted 13" alloy rims. This combination became a legend on both race track and on the street. Only 250 of these were ever made. " all that performace and on 13" wheels ... MADNESS !!! ;D

Those are only 13"?! Well, I guess it must have been some sort of economic decision. Here's a couple more- www.photostand.co.za/viewer.php?file=zqwl2t9n9o6k5clolzs0.jpgThe 1983 Ford Cortina XR6 X-Ocet, created by the specialty dealer Simpson Ford in Port Elizabeth. Similar to the earlier XR6 Interceptor, but with a single Holley 390cfm carburetor. The "X-Ocet" part was meant to evoke the Exocet surface-to-air missiles England had just used in the Falklands. Pretty rad, was this or the Interceptor that was a ride of choice for cop-turned-bank robber Andre Stander. Dunno which they used in the film. 1975 Ford Cortina XLE "Big Six", with 3.0 Essex, replete with "vierkleur" old republic flag. i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww191/BertCapri/cortinaxle013.jpgCheck the rad "Big Six" badge

People didn't go mad for huge diameter wheels until much later
a 13" wheel will have less unsprung mass than a 15", 16"
Also I am assuming South African roads can be a bit rough out of town, and having a bit more side wall might save the rim from damage...

My 24v Cortina was just over 200bhp and it would spin the 13" rims if you just added more throttle while you were already moving in 2nd gear, it used to spin up in third at 70mph as it came on cam if the road was wet. I had Pirrelli P6's on it so probably comparable to what those would have been running.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

SA roads where/are bad that's why their cortinas got a 5 link rear end to cope with them, they raced XR6 cortina quite a bit over there as well

the 3.0 essex was factory fitted in the mk3/4/5 cortina & mk4/5 bakkie (pickup the mk3 version had the 2.5 V6) the mk2 granada & full sierra range used them too inc sierra XR6 & range topping GLS the latter versions had efi. they also used the 1.6 Xflow through the cortina & sierra range.
the 3.4 version was last used in early 00's mazda pickups it was even offered in vw campers ( vw gave the vehicle warranty & ford the eng warranty!) from new.
the essex V6 & sb ford & chevy V8 engs are very popular over there with many jags, mercs & bmw's retro fitted with the latter 2 due to reliability/avlability & price compared to the std engs.

Yeah, there were Mk2 Granada Peranas, they were only produced one year, 1978. Sources from the internet indicate that Basil Green built 18 Mk2 Granadas, mostly for the Sandton and Lexington Police Traffic Units. Ol' Basil kept one for himself, and a low number were sold to private owners. They seem to be a "lost" Perana of sorts, I've read of people coming across them and passing them up as suspected Mk1 Granada Perana re-bodies, which also exist.

Remember my dad trying to source a Basil Green stage 2 cam/cylinder head and "Banana bunch" back in the day for his mk1 tina. He ended up dropping an essex in it, had to use 2nd gear to pull off, 1st was for a tyre generated smoke screen!!!

Hi, I am going to sound old now, but how times change!
Back in the 70s when I first got into cars all the performance wheels and tyres were 13". 14"and 15" were fitted to older cars and were invariably narrow, not what we wanted. With straight through top gear on 13" tyres it was an achievment to get 100mph so the fitting of disc brakes with a servo was enough, especially with their lower weight. Back then we wanted taller diffs ie. 3.9, 3.7. Nowadays with the fitting of larger diameter wheels lower diffs are needed like 4.1, back then we used to throw these away.
I once built an Avenger with a Ford essex 3 litre and that too would squeal the tyres in 3rd on the snatch. I could keep up with a local man in a 911 from standstill to about 60 mph but wouldn't do more than about 90,95 mph, great car, wish I still had it.
Back then putting different engines in different cars was quite radical and was something I enjoyed immensely. Nowadays it is the norm for more power.
I have been on here only recently and I am enjoying reading about what is done to cars that were everywhere when 'I were a lad'
Thanks for the articles, a great read about cars that I knew about at the time but not much more.
Sorry for hijacking the thread.

A Perana Capri is top of the list of dream cars for me. Interesting to see all the others they did as well.

I've got a mate who used to be in the South African police back in the day. He said they used to have V8 Capris as like pursuit specials in a Mad Max stylee, but whether they were converted or official Ford product he wasn't sure. I have a vague recollection there was an official SA-market v8 model but I may be wrong.
How cool is that as a Rozzer Wagon, though? Just like the Proffesionals. Only with more cylinders ;D
