late last night driving at 65 MPH towards a roundabout, i braked - nothing, pedal to the floor pumped the brakes two of three times and eventually stopped, going round the roundabout the front end started shaking and a loud grinding noise could be heard in car, so i pulled over to have a look I couldn't find anything wrong, plenty of brake fluid, no wheel bearing wobble etc - so i slowly carried on for the last 15 miles of my journey - with next-to-no brakes today i put the front end of the car on a trolley jack, took off the wheel trim on the near side and this fell out: the end of the drive shaft sheared off

Looks like its a fatigue fracture, what car is it? who services it? has anything been done to remove the driveshafts in it life?

Is it from a peugeot or citroen as it looks to be the same type. I would go with it being overtightened or possibly the bearing has been worn or the nut been fitted loose last time it was removed (doubtful). It would take some doing to overtighten it though if it wasnt a tapered bearing as they are normally quite a high torque

It's difficult to overtighten drive shafts - I usually find that they are way too loose

its from a 2 litre Toyota Corolla - the shaft was last out in the summer when i changed the bearing housing it wasnt over tightened - if anything it was too loose - I'm going to change the shaft this morning - and see what other damage has occured

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

What age of Corolla? ...
...1997-2002 era (AE111)? ...and was it the passenger side drive shaft?

^ Damn two years out wasn't I! ;D Nearside does sometimes fail, due to some way it takes more strain from situ from box ...haven't explained that very well (And don't think I CAN put into technical words ) but there does seem to be some design flaw with regards to this on 80's and 90's fwd corollas. Incidently has it had the nearside front wheel bearing fail in the last 3 years? ...that usually goes first!

yes, the bearing failed first - was replaced, then the shaft started rattling, shaft changed in the summer - and now shaft changed agin
and now it needs a bottom ball joint - as i split the rubber today when trying to get it off
couple of people have suggested it may have had a front end shunt in the past - and something is bent

^ Had a 'shunt' ...NOT Necessarily!
As I said in an earlier reply there is a problem with the 'nearside' failing on FWD corollas, be it driveshaft, CV joint or Wheel Bearing. A ' AE92' GTi Corolla of mine had a N/S Wheel bearing fail at 46000 mile, A friend with a 'AE82' GT had a a driveshaft/cv joint come loose at 82,000 mile ...never been 'messed with' before in cars life, components just came loose - and those were the words of the Toyota Mechanic at the garage at the time. Another friend had the N/S CV start knocking at 27,000 on her AE101 Corolla. Okay all above NOT as horiffic as your incident but there does seem to be a pattern that has emerged over the years that is some how conected with the gearbox/design/vibration etc. Or is it that the driveshaft/CV/Wheelbearing area is just weak and as we all know Nearside takes more pounding from more pot holes. Incidently whilst also mentioning the Gearbox there is a weak spot with FWD Corollas in regard to this, namely they suffer with throwing out of 3rd and 5th as they get older/higher millage.

|
|
|
|
|
|
...and
If a FWD corolla built between 1982 to 2002
. AE80/EE80/AE82 - ...1983 - 1987 . EE90/AE92 - ............1987 - 1992 . AE101/EE101 - ........1992 - 1997 . AE111/EE111/E11 - .1997 - 2002
And it has/has had 17 inch (or above) wheels fitted to it then the front suspension will destroy parts of itself in no time!

thanks for the tip - always considered this corolla a cheap to run car - but this the second shaft ive replaced, and today the bearing is grumbling on right hand lock - so a new bearing housing seems likely in the near future too
if this is a common problem - it explains why ive had trouble finding near side front parts in breakers yards etc. in the past
now i know there is a problem - i will pick up extra NSF bits when i see them
