I was having a look at my next door neighbours convertible morris minor for her today as it wouldn't start. FIrst thing was that battery was obviously dead so I stuck that on charge for a couple of hours.
Once charged it would crank over but not start. A quick check of the spark plugs showed we were getting a spark, so it must be fuel. The SU carb fuel pump was getting 12v but wasn't running so I cleaned up the contact quickly and voilal the pump burst into life.
Easy peasy I thought, however then when I cranked it over and it burst into life the engine raced like it was flat out ie the throttle was stuck wide open. It wasn't, as I checked.
I then thought there must be an airleak but there was nothing apparently obvious.
Next I took the airfilter off and found that if I started the engine and almost completely blocked the air intake hole with the palm of my hand I could get it to idle reasobly normally. So it definitely seems like there's and issue with the carb/throttle body.
I really don't know much about the workings of SU carbs so can anyone shed any light?
Cheers
