I have been thinking the same thing as I have a set of wheels I swopped off our Surf that would look ok on my Volvo I think, if you can get round the massive offset most of them have it shouldn't be a problem, the rims will take normal tyres as well as 4x4 ones.

adaptors plus a 50mm increase in offset so say a 75mm increase, would absolutely ruin the handling and you'd need to run cycle wings... back to the drawing board I'm afraid. The stance boys run very low offset wheels but without adaptor and they need excessive camber to get the stretched tyre tread under the arches

I like your thinking as I've been toying with the idea of 4x4 wheels to get the low offset I need for my own car. You'll likely end up with huge poke from that setup. Take a look for images of MX-5 with 8" XXR513 wheels. Those are ET0 and fully fill the arch and more. Fit a similar offset Vitara wheel, and the need for an adaptor will poke the wheel out probably another 25mm. Adaptors themselves are another story. 4 stud to 4 stud can be found with little problem, but fitting 5 stud wheels to a 4 stud car makes for a complicated adaptor. You can get them custom made, but personally I find that's starting to get more tricky than it's worth.

Low off set? arch extensions? Sounds great to me, plus handling is over rated any ways. This seems entirely possible easy take up the 3" excess, VVV Get it done, that 2nd set rock!

Yea I thought the offset might be a problem but if I fitted bolt on arches ^^^ like so. Some vitara wheels are only 8J wide.
The only problem really is finding someone mad enough who will machine me some adapters!! Because of the massive differences in PCD, from my diagrams it doesn't look hard to design a 5 stud to 4 stud adapter.

I have seen 5 stud to 6 stud adapters, they came in two parts the first part bolted on the hub then the second part with the new studd pattern on was bolted onto that with countersunk Torx bolts, they weren't thin but it got round the problem of the studs and holes being in each others way.

Well I think the white one would look great on those wheels and cooper cobra tyres with some big arches, almost makes me want an MX5

I took the silly 10" "wide boy" alloys with road bias tyres off my Vitara and fitted standard skinny steel wheels with AT tyres. The transformation was amazing as far nicer to drive and no way would I consider another Vitara with such wide wheels. Just saying as it might do the same to a MX5 and might ruin the drive from a nice sports car. There will be an optimum wheel / tyre combo that others will already have tried / determined so I'd check out MX5 forums to see owners actual experiences before commiting yourself to fitting them to your own car.
