Went to work in the Golf this morning, everything sounded fine. Finished work and at some point it's started blowing from the back of the engine around the manifold and downpipe area.
It's a 1990 Mk2 Golf GTI 8v. What's it likely to be and is it a nasty job?

If its a farty, lawnmowery sort of noise, almost certainly the exhaust manifold gasket as let go on just one cylinder. They do this unfortunately. (and on 5 cyl Audis as well)
If it's a more even blow then it might be that the flexi-joint between manifold and downpipe has let go, though I've not seen one fail in nearly 20 years of GTI ownership.
Both jobs have the potential to be a PITA due to rusty snapping studs but the manifold gaskets are cheap at least.....

it doesn't sound like a lawnmower. It's a deep noise in time with the engine so I think it's the flexi section.

I just replaced the flexy on a polo, the new pipe front (inc cat) was £150 so i got some universal flexy (10 inches for a fiver) and welded that in, the new section does resonate a lot though  souns tinny. |

If it's definately the flexi section, it's going to be a second-hand jobbie. If it gets to the stage where I can't find one, I'll source a second-hand stainless steel system. GSF want £95 just for the downpipe. I hope the manifold has got a hole in it, that's cheaper!  |

Had a good root around yesterday and it is ndeed the flexi section. I've found a couple of downpipes on Thiefbay so fingers crossed. GSF want £95 for one so God knows what VW want. I'd rather amputate one of my balls than pay £95!!!
