Hi ppl, I have an question for you If a sump has been chopped (to clear the crossmember on the Viva) will the dipstick still read the correct level of oil Basically after I changed the oil in the Viva it started blowing out lot's of oily smoke above 4KRPM, like an idiot I had filled it with the right amount of oil for a standard sump not a chopped sump I changed the oil again today and put about a litre less in (using a 2litre pop bottle marked up accurately to show how much I had put in), without knowing how much capacity has been lost in the sump I had to guess, I suppose if had a standard sump to hand and took the chopped one off the Viva I could work out how much capacity has been lost. Putting in less oil has cured the smoke problem but I am still not sure if the dipstick is reading right or exactly how much oil I should put in Any help gratefully received!

I would fill the sump to the old oil level not with the same quantity of oil and keep an eye on the oil pressure gauge.
The ideal is to put wings on the side of the sump to regain the lost capacity.

Use the dip stick. That gives an accurate indication of the oil level, which is the important bit. Too high and your crank dipps in it and your oil control rings get overcome, too low and your oil pickup pipe sees air when you corner and you loose oil pressure. I would be temped to keep it topped up the max or sightly over all the time to compensate for the reduced sump capacity changing the ratio of oil in the engine/sump when its running. With a smaller sump the oil level wil drop further when the engines running that the original would have done. If you inderstand it will make sence

Slaters right. But one point I would make is when I got my MK1 escort years ago the car had the wrong dipstick in so I tried keeping it at the max and suffered teh same problem as Jammzr. Try to work out the level of the crank if possible and keep it beneath that level. don't try to go from the supposed right amount for a 2.0 Pinto. Do you know how much you drained out or how much was cut away from the sump.

Make sure the dipstick still goes all the way in. If it's touching the bottom of the sump and doesn't push all the way in to the stop then it'll give a false reading. Like John said it's a good idea to weld wings on so that the total amount of oil is the same or more.

Cheers for the tips guys I will keep an eye on the dipstick then. I was thinking of getting an oil cooler in the future, would this be as good as fitting wings to the sump as it will increase the amount of oil in circulation?

Not really, as its the oil available at the pickup thats the important thing. if you remove oil from the pickup you will loose pressure/circulation and teh bearings will run dry (not good). If you are running the car normally you can get away with the reduced capacity(just!) but its better to keep the right amount of oil there. If the sump has been well baffled when the capacity has been reduced then its not as bad. How much oil did you put in?

Did you chop the sump? If you have any idea how much depth was cut out of it then by approximating the shape as a rectangle you could work out the missing volume quite easily. Should certainly get you in the right ball park I'd have thought.
