hi all, i know this isn't quite retro yet, but after a bit of googling you guys seemed to be the most knowledgable on this engine and box setup so i thought it'd be a good place to start at the moment i run a peugeot 306 1.9 dturbo on veg oil, which i munch the miles in, and an fd rx7 weekend toy. however due to needing to raise some money and drop down to just 1 car, i'm having to sell the fd. i'd quite like some rwd fun still, but have grown accustomed to the veg oil running costs of the 306. so i'm contemplating how realistically possible would it be to fit an xud9 longitudinally mated to an ldv gearbox into a mx5 1st gen? i don't know any of the measurements of these things, so was wondering what your guy's thoughts would be on whether this is 'do-able' to make it fit? or am i going to be miles off in terms of space? i know the issues of diesels in sports cars ruining weight distribution, incompatible gear ratios, etc etc have all been discussed before. i'm not worried about that. at the moment i'm just concerned with whether it can be made to fit on a moderately small budget and skillset! thanks!

You want to speak to Chairchild he was putting an XUD and LDV box into a Scimitar.

tbh, i recon itll be too tall, and the gearbox too bulky. mx5s have a low bonnet line, a reasonably short engine by, and a tunnel designed for a long and thin gearbox- whereas the lt77 or r380 is short and fat/tall. the engines are pretty tall too cos of the long stroke- not as tall as a iveco sofim, but deffo taller than a mk5 lump. bonnet mods would be trickly to make look right cos of the slippery shape, plus they're ally skinned.
i would wager a better preposition thats more likely to fit is a isuzu 1.7td off a mk3 cav, mated to a manta or carlton gearbox. like Si (B8D) used in his viva. ibe got one here to go in my victor, sat next to the mx5 engine for the missus' 100e, and they're quite close in size.

If your asking, then it's probably not a good idea in your particular case, as you won't be saving money or only need one car! It will take a long time to do, which means you will need another car, it will cost more than you think, to get it working like a production car, and still may or may not meet your expectations, keep the oil burner, or put the engine in something which has been done a few times, it will save you time and money, seeing as you have someone to ask questions of!

yups, they're a damned tall engine! Slanted at a fair old angle too, to try to keep bonnet lines low. When using the LDV Pilot gearbox, it's not as extreme an angle, so it ends up being taller. The vacuum pump is also a bit of a PITA, as it's going to be poking right into your bulkhead. This can be alleviated either by chopping the bulkhead around, or by fitting a remote vacuum pump - from a pug 205D IIRC Damned tall gearbox too! The tunnel would need extensive mods to keep it covered up. After seeing B8D's viva in the flesh, his option is by far a more compact setup! And don't try to fool yourself into thinking you'll save money on the fuel - you're literally going to spend hundreds on this conversion. Have a read through Si's build thread for inspiration: retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=readersrides&action=display&thread=75361If you want to do it, for a fun derv trackday car, then do it! If you want it for practicality, then you're going to be chasing your own tail I'm afraid Piccy for fun:

What diff would you use?
A std 1.6 diff is 4.11 or 4.30 which would give you a top speed of about 75!
The highest ration mx5 diff was a 3.6 which is rare as unicorn nuts and therefore expensive.
The MX5 lump is heavy, so weight might not be quite so much of asn issue as gearing and height.

Buy a BMW Z3 and swap a 318tds/325tds drivetrain in it.
That should be a lot simpler and cheaper. But still creating the effect you're after.

That sounds like quite a good combo! shame the Z3's still fetch rather silly money. Looks like about £1k for even the shabbiest ones However... MGB's seem to go for about £500, and they just just a FWD engine/gearbox slapped in the back. It would most likely be pretty awkward to fit the pug/citroen engine, as the gearchange and driveshafts would take a bit of head-scratching. However.... Grab the Rovers diesel engine (with mechanical pump, far less to go wrong, easier to tune, and less wiring!) from an old 220 or 420, and The mounts/driveshafts should be a straight swap! The diesel gearbox has a different bellhousing pattern, so you would need that too. But seeing as 220's can be bought for less than £500 with an mot (mine was £240, WITH mot!!) take what you need, break the rest for parts, and weigh in what doesn't sell, to make back the cost of purchase Swapping the clocks would also mean a full compliment of working gauges/speedo, and as they're from the same family, wiring should be a doddle! Same goes for whatever donor car you get - if you buy a complete car, it won't be much more expensive than an engineless car, and the money you can make from selling the engine, will more than make up for the difference Whereabouts are you located? No doubt there'll be plenty of people willing to help with such a conversion!
