Well, not that good.
My car has, all of a sudden, started to vibrate, a lot, at around 30. It gets worse as road speed increases, but engine speed has no effect. It comes through the steering wheel a lot. The gaiters round the cv joints look ok, and I've swapped the wheels round with the spare which made no difference at all.
It's a diesel Citroen ZX.
Any ideas on what could be the problem?

I thought it might be a wheel out of balance, but put the spare on the side I thought it was, no difference at all. Swapped the one I'd taken off for the other side, still no difference.
I'm convinced it's a problem at the front, given how much the steering wheel is shaking.

play in a track rod end can cause these symptoms (as can bottom ball joint, but TRE is more common) - Jack the front wheels up and check for play. side to side for tre and up/down (or lever under the tyre) for BBJ

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Changed both of them (wasn't a waste of time, one of them was completely shot), and the vibration is still there. I didn't think there was much movement top to bottom, but I'll try again.

Are these rack and peanut or steering box? Our old 110 used to do it when the steering box was loose.

Does it invcease with speed ? if it does check wheels and tyers First thing I did was swap the wheels around, I think I'll have another go just in case I swapped the dodgy one back on. could be the wheel bearing is shot? Yes, it increases with road speed. I've changed both TREs and both ball joints, and it's better-it only becomes unbearable at 60 now, rather than 45 How do I check the wheel bearings? Jack it up and spin the wheels?

Does it occur with the power on the car or not?
If it does it with the power on I would say you have a knackered inner CV joint.
