Hello all, I've taken bits and bobs of the merc (and the moped) All aluminium bits which are grubby and horrible. What is the best way of cleaning these to a shine? And once shiny, can they be covered in clear coat to protect them? Cheers!

That's your first mistake right there. You don't ask, you wait till she's gone shopping, or some other stereotypical activity Most water wash degreaser will take care of the oil. A bit of wire wool does wonders afterwards.

electrolysis tank is good at lifting oily dried on grime off engine bits, and that horrible powery white guff of ally bits too.
i actually prefer a non-shiny finish on ally bits, so i tend to sandblast them them then laquer straight away, give a sandcast look to them.

I'll try that. I'm sure I can find some degreasing agent in the house, and get some wire wool!

The shiny part is mostly for the sides of the moped engine btw. For the rest I agree with Dez, under the bonnet can just be clean.

For corroded alloy I find the type of oven cleaner that clearly states "not suitable for alluminium" works great :-) You only have to leave it on for short period otherwise it will eat into the good alloy but easy to do several light applications - washing off with water inbetween each

I've asked her... She said no... What? Isn't it your dishwasher too..? She puts burnt greasy pots in it, what's the difference? Oven, dishwasher, i've used both for engines and she had no say in the matter - but for assurance that both would be left suitably clean. And i was being tactful - the alternative was her getting slapped, gagged and tied to the bed ready for once i'd finished with the engine. WTF happened to men. Seriously.
