Hello retrorides
I am going to visit an old (circa 1987) van tomorrow and was wondering if anyone with a bit of experience could give some advice on what to look out for. I've been told its in "good condition" but won't know what that means till I get there! Believe its a 6 cylinder non turbo 2.4 D
Cheers

Where to start, check for rot in the usual places, bottom of doors (non structual) around front windscreen, front steps, footwells, and anywhere salty water can spray, fuel gauges have a habit of not working. Don't know of any particular problems with the gearbox and drive line but cambelt should be changed at recomended intervals on diesels as they do more work then their petrol counterparts. Please don't expect earth shattering performance, the n/a diesel is stately to say the least, expect cruising at about 50mph to be comfortable but much more than this becomes loud and strained, but saying that it will do 50 all day without complaint, if you want anything faster probably be better with the 6 cylinder petrol model. Brakes should be good (large discs on front and large effective drums on rear).
Please don't be put off by anything I have mentioned, I love driving our 1979 LT35 and if you want a well built retro van then you won't go far wrong with an LT just don't expect it to go like a modern LT/Sprinter :-)

Thanks very much,
Certainly not expecting anything Earth shattering although its nearly large enough to do that sort of job. Had a bit of experience driving a '72 Type 2 so get the idea, just hoping it will be a bit more reliable than that thing. Thanks again

I've moved houses at least four times with the help of two different LT28's. They're noisy and slow but I'd have one anytime, nothing beats the sound of the straight 2.4-litre six cylinder diesel when you rev it ;D The head gaskets are pretty weak on the 2.4D and the cylinder heads tend to crack if you don't ensure proper cooling, i.e. rev easily when cold and let the engine cool down properly on idle after driving before shutting the engine off.

I'll bear that in mind, thanks kaeferkind. Going to the visit this evening, quite excited now as got some good reviews from a range of knowledgeable people. Now the fun bit, insurance quotes!
