just heard steve wright claiming that the brakes on an Aston Martin vanquish generate enough heat energy stopping the car from 200mph to power a house for two weeks.
My first thought was "wow", followed by 1/100th of a second later by "bo11ox".
The heat energy must come from the ptential energy of the car right, which comes from the fuel used to get the car up to 200mph. I imagine this is around a large cup full of petrol, which would not power a house for two weeks!
I'm right and their rubbish. er right?

Erm... yeah.... if the drink addled physics department in my head is working (yes, I'm aware what time of the day it is!) then surely it's impossible to expend more energy stopping the car than it did to get it up to that speed in the first place...

Well the energy will be 1/2 x M x V^2 and it sure won't be the same number of killowatt hours as keeping a house warm for two weeks. I need to work it out on a piece of paper...

Ok, 200mph works out to 89.4 metres/sec Checking out Aston Martin's website, a Vanquish weighs 1875kg so... 1/2 x 89.4 ^ 2 x 1875 comes to 7492837.5 Joules using the handy converter on my calculator, this makes a bit over 2 kilowatt-hours, or enough to power a 3kw fire for about 40 minutes...
not quite two weeks then ;D

Maybe Steve Wright has solved one of mans greatest conundrums. Hes invented a way of making energy from nothing. The mans a genius!
Personally I turn off as soon as Jeremey Vine has finished.

I should have realise that my post would involve admitting that I was listening to Steve Wright. It's on in the office, we take turns with the station. Strangley Steve Wright is quite popular. Maybe because he's so numbingly mindless that it's easy to work while he's on. They get radio 6 when it's my turn. :-)
