Spraying and VOCDeleted

The authorities have been talking about banning celly and 2K paint to the amateur due to VOC emissions. I was doing some spraying earlier, 2K, but something I noticed was actually how little volume of paint I get through to spray quite a large area. This means I'm putting out a lot less VOC using the spray gun than if I was using a load of rattle cans which aren't going to be banned (I think). I'll probably use about 1/3 litre of 2K paint with 10% thinners doing what I was doing or I expect 6 rattle cans of paint including primer which are mainly propellant and thinners.
Just a thought.

Yep this paint reg is a thigh slapper alright, youre right in thinking rattle cans arent going to banned, and this water based stuff is an absolute nightmare to use, only the big boys will stay in business if this is all thats available, but personally I reckon it will be gotten around, someone will, if they havent already, come up with some sort of accelerant, stopper or other additive that will make the water based paints easy to use at home or in small spray shops without the warm airstream. The government screw these things up, the desire to make a buck usually fixes them (sort of).

Was supposed to be January `07 but I`ve got a feeling its been put back, aslo seem to remember a painter telling me they`ve got a year to sell up old stock when it does come in but don't quote me on that. They wont leave us alone because we all have a reg. plate through which we can be traced, so if we get caught doing anything against these feeble minded regs it`ll be easy to catch up with us and get some dough off us. Trying to find someone whos just bricked a load of windows is harder and less profitable. Not having a rant as such thats just how I see it.

I'm yet to try water base at home ,i think it should be ok if the temp' of the garage is worm so it will dry fully before laquering, i have also heard that regesterd resto' companies will be exempt from the ban and i think it is a UK thing so privately importing may be an option.......

the idea of this coming in has been floating around for some time now so quite a few of the paint shops have already found ways around it so i don't think it will hat as hard as people think i'm not to worried about it

No I'm not particularly worried about it either as since we know plenty of people inside chances are we'll be able to get paint anyway. Just seems silly in my mind that technically I'll be able to legally empty 20 rattle cans over a car but not blow it over with a litre of paint in a gun

Blimey, this gets discussed on here regularly without it sinking in doesn't it...
1/1/2007 - an effective ban on the sale of celly, 1K, 2K, and other non-compliant paints. However a loophole exists to allow the sale of paint made before 1/1/2007 to be sold up unitl 31/12/2007 at which point it is illegal to sell or use it regardless of when it was made.
There is an excemption for specific classic and vintage cars of "historical value" to be painted in celly. No modified cars will be allowed to be painted in celly. The approval is granted PER CAR not by bodyshop or individual painter. There is no mechanism in place for granting these licences yet.
Most paint companies have already stopped making celly. Many stopped years ago because so little is sold these days.
There are a couple of companies who have said they will cobntnue to make celly for restoration specialists. It won't be availebale through your local paint factor.
However ther regs only seem to apply to top coats and colour coats at the moment. So you can still buy 2K primer, Expoxy primer and celly primer after 1/1/2008.
The reason rattle cans have not been legislated yet is either because no compatible technology exists or because the government haven't realised.
Rattle can painting is probably 0.00001% of paint consumption in the UK. The vast majority is OE manufacture and the refinishing trade who are mostly on waterbased by now, or closing down soon...
Waterbased needs air flow to dry. Thats the only issue with it for the home user. If your garage is clean enough to allow you to run a series of fans to blow air over the car while drying without sprayig dust into the finish then you can use WB at home. Its less toxic than 2K.
However I have heard a lot of complaints that WB paint is no where near as durable as 2K and chips off dead easyily.
