I know this is not a retro ride but I also know how helpful and skilled the people on here are so I am after some advice if possible to the issue below :
The other halves Polo 1.4 16v (Eng code AUB Gearbox ETB) has got an annoying chatter type noise when driving along. Seems to be more in 4th / 5th gear and really noticeable when slowing down and the noise gets faster so it is speed related.
If I put my foot on the clutch or take car out of gear the noise goes, it doesn't do it when the car is in neutral and standing idle. If I put my foot slightly on the clutch the noise changes hence why I thought pressure release bearing.
I first thought it may be the pressure release bearing but since visiting a local garage he seems to think it is more bearings or worse gearbox itself.
I have since read stories of checking oil etc although there has been no leak and I thought these gearbox were life sealed ?
So any ideas as to where to start - I'm guessing checking the oil in which case where is the drain and fill on the gearbox ?
Then next step is to take the gearbox out - garage said 3 hours labour but as funds are tight going to attempt this myself - is this a fairly simple process ?
Then check bearings - again guessing spinning the bearings and see if making noise ?? This is the part that I am not sure of and maybe return to garage and ask them to check and change ?
Or alternative is to get a recon gearbox and just simply replace - is this an easier option ?
As I said funds are really limited (like most people these days) so any help and advice will be greatly received.
Update below:
Topped up the oil today, couldn't get the drain plug undone as didn't have my trolley jack to hand so didn't fancy chancing the VW scissor jack.
However noise still there, think I may go to another garage for a second opinion on it being bearings in the gearbox as it seems to make the noise in every gear, bit like something catching and as you speed up so does the noise really hard to describe but like say putting a stick against the spokes of a bike wheel - wheel goes slow stick against spokes slow, as wheel get faster stick hits more times in relation to the speed.
Weird one just trying to work out if it's 100% in the gearbox or clutch as I really can't afford to shell out on labour etc just to find cause.
Really would appreciate any advice possible - thanks
