I'm sorry to go over what is a fairly well-trodden topic, but I'd be grateful for some guidance before ordering my tyres.
I have some 7Jx13 Cobra Dragslots, have fairly limited arch (lip) clearance and want a period look, with fairly tall sidewalls. Would a 165/65 sit reasonably on a 7J rim? I want to avoid 185/60s if I can.
Thank you.

They'll go on, but in my opinion the performance will be compromised. Most manufacturers recommend a 6 or 6.5j rim for a 185, so that gives you some idea. Why do you want to avoid 185s?

175/60 as a compromise between the 165 & 185's? Pics on an 8, so just imagine 1/2" less stretch each side. 165/55 is pretty common on a 7" so I don't see any reason why the 165/65 wouldn't work. Which indeed they do, 165/55 on a 7".

It has been done before (I believe Bryn has done this to his MGB). I would say you should be fine, and it would probably look alright too . Mark, I have noticed the sidewall seems to have an impact on how wide a rim you can put a tyre onto when it comes to manufacturer's recommendations (it seems the lower the sidewall the profile the wider you can go). I would be willing to give 175/60s a go. Is 185 a no no due to the wheelarch issues? I thought on a Dolly you can 'just' fit them in, or does the width of the wheel make it an issue on the rears? Here here for a thread on the Dolly and that sweet looking Anglia .

I think that Anglia is on here - but I've no idea whose it is!

165 is really narrow on a 7" rim! Most people with stock Beetles run a 165/80R15 on a 4.5" wide rim! I would say that for a proper old-school look you would want at least 195s on a 7", preferably 205s.

Thank you all for the very helpful advice and guidance on here.
I'm visiting my local secondhand tyre place on Tuesday to try some sizes out. Visually at least, the fave at the moment is the 165/55 - not a size I'd previously considered. The reason I want to avoid the 185/60s is that I've found that quite square-shouldered in the past and I think they'd catch on the Toledo's rear arches.
I'll put a thread of the 2dr Toledo when it is finished and resplendent in lots of period (awful) accessories!
