Hi,
Having trouble with the charging circuit on my Porsche 944, changed he alternator 3 times but still not charging so I'm pritty sure it's not an alternator fault. The main wiring runs from the alternator to the starter then up to the battiery. I've checked the cable and it all seems fine. It's definatly turning... I'm running out of ideas
Help?

Remains fairly constant at 11.42v, engine running or not. Drops when loaded with light etc.

Does the alternator light in the dash work?

Doesnt have one, just a factory gauge. I.ve been using a multimeter to check the voltage.

Do you not think that it may just be the battery isn't holding the charge? If you're getting 11.42v through the cables, it seems to be getting power through, though the reading @ about 2500rpm should read about 14.4v so you're not getting enough power really.

Meter the alternator when it's running. Should be putting out 14V straight away. If it's not then I'd susopect it's not getting an exciter current. Not sure what year your car is but 1984 electricals from here: www.pelicanparts.com/944/electrical/944_84_4_2.jpgCurrent track 32 is the generator charge lamp. If this is blown or not fitted it will not charge.

Thing you might be on to something. Checked and the charging light wasn't working. Put a new bulb and it lit up. However it's rather dodgy. Doesn't always light something's loose some where and I think as soon as the car starts the connection is broken. Is there a way to bypass that for testing?

Can I just put a 12v feed on to the blue wire just for testing?

yes you can no probs at all, then check what the voltage at the batt is if still only 11 v then me thinks alt might be knackered or poss wiring probs
Why not jusy wire a bulb from a 12v supply to the alt and see if it goes out and then check voltage

They do have a light (square dash), and this is part of the circuit, fit the bulb first.

Find and fix the fault properly please I deal with enough bodged wiring on 924s to know the germans didn't do things by halves what is there is perfectly adequate and just needs diagnosing and repairing.

All fixed. First found that was the issue by running a wire from the battery. The took the gauge out and circuit tested the blue wire, found a rather iffy connection eventuley behind the dash. Cut it back soldered a new connect, spot of heat srink and it's all done.
Thanks for the advice guys
