One for all the yank stuff gurus out there.....
If i get a TH400 from a 70's Big block caddy, whats the bolt pattern on there? Is it BOP or is it chevy?
I basically want to know if i get bored with the 700r4 in my firebird will a th400 bolt up to the motor.
Cheers.

Hmm not 100% on bellhousing patterns but a TH400 will suck a hell of a lot of power compared to a 700r4 which is designed for smal blocks, a TH400 probably takes 30bhp to run the damn thing, not really an issue on an 8 litre Caddy but on a small block might be a problem...

interesting point that. It seems a lot of the US third gen owners have put th400's behind 350's. Mainly because a th700r4 is seen as weak when put behind even a vaguely hot motor (or it seems to be regarded that way over there anyway)

WHS. ^^^
TH400 is also very heavy. I had one land on my chest LOL Its also quite bulky.
So you add maybe 70KG to the car, sap an extra 20 BHP from your 305, you lose a gear and will need to modify the crossmember and maybe the floor pan to fit it. I don't see the win.
99% sure Cadillac is BOP Pattern.
If you have a BOP pattern TH400 available I would be interested in it to go behind an Oldsmobile V8 in my '81 LeSabre... Although I would probably be better going for a T200-4R as these are 4 speed (overdrive)....

oh, TH400 is the drag racer's choice. Build a strong small block and a TH400 becomes a worthwhile option although a TH350 is still lighter and saps less power and can be built strong enough to take a pile of power

grab yourself a reverse manual valve-body for it too - turn that sucker into a wannabe sequential gearbox! Was planning on it for my jag V12.. but then reality hit, and I sold the parts

I'll have a look at that if I can scrape some pennies together. Bills to pay first though
