I have had three old Civic's in the past and think they are great motors. The first one I had was a two door 1200 manual. The things handle pretty well and go great. It's no wonder this model put Honda on the map. This is the first one I had... It was £100 and after thrashing the life out of it for 6 month and 6000 miles I sold it for £50 with no mot. It was dead reliable and really economical. It didn't matter if you did 30mph or 90mph, it still did 40 to the gallon. The last one I had a a four door 1400 Hondamatic. They are suprisingly quick for what they are and great fun as well. One day I'll get myself anothjer one to do a little tweeking on. A Vtech powered one would be ace. The older Honda's have never really had much of a following here (apart from the S600/S800) which is a shame. I'd love to get my hands on either of these two. A Civic cabriolet and a wagon. I think they did sel wagons here in '74 but I've never seen one. Salt flats racer style Civic... Honda Z's are way cool...they do actually fetch strong money here for a good one now... I think these little Honda step vans are cool to. There's also a pickup version!

One of these made it to the UK as an evaluation model. The car still exists too. Known as the 1300, it was also made as a 4 door saloon. With typical honda thinking the car had a high revving potent engine.

Darren, I thought Honda actually did market the 1300 Coupe here, rather than just bring one in for evaluation. I'm sure one of the magazines at the time road tested one

DHX 40H? Autocar (and Motor too I think) gave it the thumbs up. But I think Honda didn't think that such a car could be marketed here - they didn't have the pedigree and heritage they have today. Shame really, it would have shown BMC and Ford a thing or two.
I guess they decided that a sporting coupe wouldn't be as profitable as the family Civic, which proved to be ideal for mass marketing in Europe.
