Hi gents.
now i am planning on completly stripping the imp down to a bare shell i was thinking about how i can get the car right in the air to work on it.
I was thinking of maybe using some beefy trestle legs but unsure on safety and loadings weights? can you guys advise on if it's a good/bad idea and any other ways in which you lot get a car right in the air for sustained amounts of time.

Check the cj autos website. They do quite a lot of stuff like that. You might find you're able to make something similar. I guess an imp isn't too heavy so you might be able to get away with something of a light weight construction.

I made some out of wood. I had a load of battens maybe about 2cm by 4 and knocked them together with a chainsaw and some woodscrews. Look flimsy but were plenty strong enough, and I cut them down to a shorter height later on in the build as I needed.

Yes the imp is v light when stripped so i think your right about a light weight construction, I was thinking a dolly that could move the shell around and then the shell be lifted onto 'something' to give the height.

That's the exact thing that i was thinking, so it was strong enough to take a mini van, must be strong enough for an imp. Cheers for posting that picture!!!!

I've got a pair of proper builders trestles that I use for all sorts of things. The load rating is well over a tone for the pair.
KeeKlamp fitting and scaffolding poles are another of my favourite things to make frames out of and ideal for roll over frame supports. Luckilly I managed to get a large quantity (several hundred fittings) cheaply off eBay as they are dear to buy new so recommend that way of sourcing. Tubeclamp is a rival product and sometimes a little cheaper. Scaffolding poles are getting difficult to find secondhand due to H&S saying those no longer fit for scaffolding have to be destroyed !

If I were you I'd build a spit. That way you can always weld in a comfortable position (i.e: not on your back getting red hot sparks down your sleeve!)
