If you do wish to stick with the TR7 engine the best mods to do before you touch the carbs are the exhaust manifold and exhaust (the former is pretty poor on most slant Triumphs) and ignition system in addition to a good tune. These should wake up a TR7 . These mods on a Sprint engined TR7 (where unlike the Dolomite you can fit a good manifold) will make for a swift and revvy TR7 . On a Sprint engined TR7 once the basics have been covered (exhaust, carbs, timing, tune etc.) 2" SUs are meant to work very well. On a stock TR7 engine, head porting, fruitier cam and then going for the 1" 3/4 SUs gives the engine a little more pep .

Out of the bunch, the TR7 exhaust manifold looks to be the 'best' design, not being a log like the others; though stainless 4 branches are available from Robsport (I still want to see if I can adapt one to fit the 1850...)

AFAIK I thought TR7s came with 1" 1/2 SUs and the Sprints came with the 1 3/4" SUs. I have heard of 2" SUs being fitted to a Sprint, and adding some speed to them . From what I have seen the tubular manifolds are a superior design to either offering good gains. Do the TR7 manifolds fit the Sprint engine with the head differences? The biggest issue with the Dolomite over the TR7 is the inner wing space. If you compared the the two like for like, in some respects the TR7 engine bay is an easier place to work (although the wierd bulkhead does not always help, hence why I believe you can fit more freer flowing manifolds to the TR7 . My pics don't show it too well: Dolly Sprint 'bay: TR7 Sprint: How is your Dolly coming along? Reckon it will be done for the Gathering? .

Easiest upgrade for an 1850 is to fit the inlet and HS6s from a TR7, as the 1850 came with HS4s stock. Off the top of my head, only my mate Carls Sprint (and one other, that's got all sorts of updated stuff on it) has 2" SUs, it's rather rapid!
I'm fairly sure the TR7 is wider at the suspension turrets, but yes, fitting a tubular manifold to a Dolly requires scalloping of the turret or very very tight bends. Not sure if the TR7 manifold fits a Sprint, I think it bolts up to the 1850 though. I'm fairly sure the TR7 manifold will give a small gain over the Dolly log, but not sure if it fits in the space.
Err, still broken. I keep getting distracted by non important things (like painting it a stupid colour) and forgetting to just fix the brakes and finish the welding. Hopefully be ready by my birthday (July), let alone the Gathering!

Paint it pink lol Sprint engines eh, I've been researching them a bit and they seem to go pretty hard for a 4banger. Say if I wanted to get one, do you need a different gearbox/tailshaft/diff etc? or does it all just mount up? Do they cost much to buy? and where can you find them for sale online? Edit# Regarding suspension, I wonder how you could put coilovers in one of these? hmmm

They are near enough a bolt up affair. The prices they go for are variable (I've seen private sellers sell them for £100-250 even with a gearbox and tubular manifold for a TR7 although their condition coul not be vouched for). Bell housing etc is the same for all of the Triumphs). Robsport want £750 for a good running engine. One thing to remember is that a troublesome Sprint engine will be a world of pain as the haters will make out. A good one however should serve you well and put a smile on your face .

Need pics of one on 14" donuts. Also think I know what wheel size I would want, 14x7-6 or so.
