Right, well I'm planning on doing some painting ;D my first spray job but had a couple of questions.
#1 the paint I'm planning on using is military paint from paints4trade.com. They have an eBay shop and I've rollered with their NATO green MV paint and got good results, plus it's cheap! But the roof is going to be dry flake buried in clear celly
I noticed they do gloss MV paint, enamel, can you cut back and polish enamel paint?? Say, if I got a run or orange peal.
#2 the car is satin black at the mo, but I'm not sure what type of paint it is? The guy was a pro sprayer so it could be 2k, it could be celly? Is there any way to tell if it'll react badly with the paint I'm going to put on top? Or is their a way to stop it reacting?
I'm going to be doing a few small body mods so some is going to be back to bare metal. And the spray job is going to be done outside, under a gazebo and on a tarp.
Any help, advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I've always done my DIY paint jobs in celly and outside under a gazebo. I always use celly as it's the easiest to flat back and polish so orange peel and runs are no problem as long as you've chucked enough paint on. I don't know about enamel paint but I'd assume the finish is straight from the gun/can.
I've never painted over satin so I can't tell you whether it will need flatting if you're going to paint directly onto it. If it was me doing it, I'd do the body mods and prime the whole thing just in case of reactions but if you really can't be arsed, try a small area and see. wet flat the primer back with 800 wet and dry, panel wipe it and then paint it with celly. Stick 3-4 good coats on so you can flat it back with 1500 W&D and then 2000 W&D then mop it with some G3 or decent cutting paste, be sure to use plenty water too as the mop will burn the new paint.
Try and do it on a nice summer day under a gazebo and wet the floor to stop any dust flying up. Leave the new paint for a few days to harden a bit before flatting too.

You can't really cut and finish those enamel/synth/truck/commercial paints.

Cheers guys, I might just say feck it and do the whole thing in celly. Don't really want to go the whole hog of doing a paint job only to mess it up with my cack handedness and not be able to rectify it.
My plan was to put lots of paint on and cut it back to a good finish if I need to, the whole MV paint idea goes out of the window if it gun finish only.

As always preparation is the key..... I would flat the whole car and prime it up. Then wet flat the primer before spraying the colour coats. As above if it's cellulose you can flat and polish it to improve the finish.

You can't really cut and finish those enamel/synth/truck/commercial paints. true , they are very oily paints , it is possible to flat and mop up etc but more hassle than its worth , prime the car with a gun so you know its thick , then either flat it back dry or wet flat it,.

Cheers guys, everything is going to go on with a gun and go on nice and thick!
Thinking 2 coats of primer and 4 or 5 coats of celly, does that sound about right? Should I wet sand it between each coat?
I want plenty of paint on so I can cut it back incase I cock it up.
Can you put laquer on celly? It's going to get some flames at some point, I was thinking flat it back, do the flames and laquer, but would it be better to polish the paint back to gloss?? (it's going to be black btw)

Put a couple of coats of some nice, thick high build primer. Four to five coats of celly will give you plenty to play with and you can nib any inperfections down between each coat if you want but obviously, the paint needs to quite dry to do that. I just let each coat go a bit tacky then chuck the next one one. You can put celly lacquer on it if you want but you'll get a nice, glossy finish just by wet flatting then polishing it. Take your time and it'll come out good! These are my last three celly spray jobs-
