I have just completed the paperwork for a Volvo 460GLEI. 1991 in BEIGE! It only cost me £100, so cant really grumble. Does anyone know of any mods that can be done on these? Its the Auto version (proper old mans car I know) so, I would assume that I am fairly limited. It has the 1.7 Renault engine, and only 98k on the clock. Expect to see me cruising down the middle lane of the M1 at 40mph very soon! .......Well, got to get into the Volvo style!

Pictures please. If it's got a black leather interior you may be receiving a PM. I have a 460 Turbo you see, and a leather interior is on my hit list. As for mods, it depends what you want. Doing the suspension the right way, you're limited to [expensive] options from Bilstein and Koni. 40 mm single rate lowering springs are available, too. Brake wise you can get plain Brembos for a decent price. PCD is 4 x 100 so there's a HUGE choice of wheels out there. I personally think a set of ATS Type 5s would look great with the aforementioned drop and some 195\50 15s. Volvo did a fair range of aftermarket bits for the 400s - you could try and hunt out a set of 15" Vegas if you wanted to go OEM. There were also dealer option Momo steering wheels - the Palm Beach and Daytona - to choose from. That said, the correct Momo adaptor and any wheel from their range is your oyster. Tuning wise the auto box is going to limit what you can do to some extent. The 1721 cc engine is OK in naturally aspirated form putting out between 106 and 110 BHP. Fairly torquey but your 'box will sap some of that. It's a surprisingly involved conversion to drop a Turbo engine in there because of the ECUs involved. The 400s had a lot of on board electronics - not all of which worked brilliantly. The CEM (Central Electronic Module) that controls the digital display in the dash are notorious for going west if left for any amount of time, so keep an eye on it. It all boils down to choice at the end of the day. Start a reader's ride thread so I can have a look.

Only the 480 had a CEM, the 440 and 460 is a less complicated in that aspect.

If my 460 hasn't got a CEM, how does the information centre work then?

After all that planning, I have taken it back to the curse word i bought it from, as its going to cost £500 to get through MOT. Looking for something else now. £150 is the budget though.

Why didnt you scrap it, you would of had more than £150 to play with then too.
I think you're being very optimistic thinking that you're going to buy a road legal motor for £150 mate.

Hmmm - You say you can't really complain but now you are complaining that the car needs work after buying it for £100.
Not overly realistic are you

I think you're being very optimistic thinking that you're going to buy a road legal motor for £150 mate. Errr.... On Saturday afternoon Hardcore decided he needed a car to carry all his stuff home from Area 52. I quote; "This weekend I went to Area:52. I bought some Audi parts before realising I had no way of transporting them home, so I bought a K10 Micra with t&t for £100 to carry them in. Then we turned it into an AE86 replica. Excellent "From deciding he 'needed' a car to finding it and agreeing to buy it was approx 10 mins. It came with MOT and tax until the end of July and was quite a nice little car apart from having a black chequered roof and black bonnet. Before anyone could blink it was in the Area workshop and being made to look like a baby AE86 for the grand outlay of absolute zero. Probably about 3 hrs to completely dry it, remove all stickers, lower it, paint it, paint the wheels, door graphics...all with no prior planning. All for £100. Just picked up, in the unit and out of the rain: Inspiration: Not a good look! Work underway Tongue in cheek of course, but what more can you expect on a £100 car, no extra money and only a few hours? It was awesome fun too... So there you go, £150 is perfectly acheivable.....

Mate, I've bought plenty of cars sub £200, but with scrap the price it is the only way you're going to get a car for that price is if you know the seller, they don't know the scrap price, or the car is shed, where you're going to spend more than £150 anyway.
So yeah it might be achieveable, but its still very optimistic..

So yeah it might be achieveable, but its still very optimistic.. He didn't know the seller from Adam, the car is in very good condition (FAR too good to scrap), has 3 months tax & test and was £100. What more proof do you need? This wasn't the only option either, I think there were about four, maybe five, other options for a car all below £200 and most below £150 - all with test and road legal. What's optimistic about that?

Like I said because of scrap prices,
1- its a bag of wibblepoo only fit for the scrapper 2- whoever is selling it doesnt know the price of scrap, seen as though everyman and his dog thinks their "shed" is worth money you're less likely to find a car sub £200 that is driveable and decent.
If its not optimistic, lets see how long it takes him without an enthuisiast off here donating him something and then see what car and condition its in.
I'm not saying its impossible, I used to buy some cracking cheap cars and sell them at good profits but I wouldnt be seen dead in cars that are sub £200 now, even though thats not my point.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree on that one then, but I can certainly say that what I was looking at over the weekend wasn't a bag of wibblepoo and wasn't 'donated' by an enthusiast. It's called knowing where to look and what to look for. It works and Hardcore's car is proven testament to that. Fact.

Again, I know personally how to find bargains I've bought cars that are worth 3-4 times more than I paid, thats not my point.
Course you can find them, but for what he wants, a reliable, cheap daily runner with T+T as soon as possible then its optimistic, whichever way you look at it.
He sent the car back that needed work doing, so I'd suggest by putting more to his budget he'll end up with a better overall car and something he'll be happy with.

davedge, you're assuming that everyone is out to make a fast buck. I've seen plenty of cars advertised for less than scrap value (or right on the money) for the sole reason that the owner would rather see the car kept on the road than sent over the bridge. IIRC Sam Glover was flogging a T+T'd Volvo 240 recently for £150 over on autoshite, for example.
As for people not knowing what scrap value is, I reckon that applies to 99% of people out there. I'm pretty sure only people that are 'into' cars or are connected to the motor (or scrap) trade in some way would have the faintest idea what scrap metal is worth.

Not really, its just most people who arent "enthuisiasts" don't really care whether a car gets to "live" or not, meaning they want the best price they can get.
You're right, not everyone knows the exact price of scrap, but like I said, they're the people you will get the "bargains" from.
The majority of people might not know about scrap prices but you don't see many cars advertised for less than scrap value, do you?
