So I picked up this old radio, don't think it works and Id never use it as it is. The idea is I'm going to strip the inside out, fit an amplifier and speakers so I can play my ipod through it. First idea was to scratch build an amp for it but that seemed to complicated and abit pricey.Second thought was if I used a car amp and wired it to a 12v mains adaptor would that work? Radio in question Edit, change of plan, will be using a small mains amplifier, lots less hastle, now all I need to do is make the frame work inside for the speakers to mount to.

Why not see if you can make the tuning panel hinge so you simply have an unmodified car CD / radio with iPod input hidden behind and controled via the remote ? The best power supply would be a CB unit although somebody with more knowledge will probably be able to tell you how to use a computer PSU.

Less work doing it with just an amp. I can use a jack plug socket mounted into one of the vent holes on the side to keep things clean and tidy.

Why not get a pair of decent computer speakers with build in amplifier and mount them behind the grill. Problem solved instantly - main adapter, amplifier, speakers, lead for iPod etc Slot cut in control knobs would allow adjustment of volume / on & off operation with small screwdriver through the holes in the mesh.

why not head here, some excellent expert advice there. forum.speakerplans.com/forums.htmlcar audio stuff isnt that great really, better of perfecting the enclosure, fitting the best speakers you can afford, and i would go with a tripath amp (a high effeciency amp). are you Living Dead Design? ive seen that on FB.

I've converted little radios with either home made amplifier chips or the little pre-made potted amplifier modules you can get from Maplin and on eBay, powered by batteries. The speakers have been a mixture of either spare car speakers or Maplin stuff, but you can use pretty much anything. A 20W amp and a 6" speaker would be plenty on a box that size, if it's as big as I think it is. In all of mine I've just panelled over the existing front panel with a hole the right size for the new speaker. I've not bothered with porting or getting the volumes ideal because it's difficult to make a new box to fit inside the existing box, if you know what I mean. It produces quite good sound with just a decent amount of wadding inside the box to deaden the echo. Use Dacron or loft insulation for that

Yup thats me. Iv been reading abit and using a car amp doesnt seem the best option, I have some reasonable speakers from a hifi system and I'm thinking of stripping a hifi tower bit to pieces for the amp etc. I thought about using computer speakers but at a higher volume they never seem to be good sounding.
