I want to fit a set of Golf 13" steel wheels to my Renault 5. Have checked clearances and everything seems OK.
One bother is a limited supply of 185/55 R13 tyres (only one type available on Mytyres) so I might have to compromise with 175s.
The main trouble I have is the centre bore of the wheels.
VW are 57.1 mm, Renault are 60.1. that's a 3mm difference on diameter so 1.5mm on radius. Can I fix this with marking out well and a careful tickle with a die grinder and finish with a file?
Offset checks out OK, In fact the VW offset is beneficial, it's just the centre bore that is bothering me.
My other options are banding the Renault wheels, but since it will be the back of the wheel that is banded I would deffo need to run spacers then.

... well, 'ragging' out the centre of a steel wheel seems a tad iffy, to me. I don't imagine that part of the 'pressing' is safety critical... but I would throw them into a local M/C shop and have it done on a lathe. The guys could 'finish' the cut with a clean radiused edge, not making it a stress riser. 2centz ovimor

If its any help I have a pair if 185 55 13s that are 300 miles old but do have some gashing due to arch contact. Only after 40 quid though.

Get the centre machined out properly, should only cost about £30 if you can find someone with a big enough lathe who likes cash!

That's the trouble. I made some enquiries a few years ago but drew a blank.
If anyone knows someone near or in Bristol who has a lathe big enough to chuck up 13" steel wheels I would be interested.

It's a thought, I have loved some of the build threads that have come out of there so would love to meet some of the peeps there.

Might be easier to find someone who has a lathe big enough to take the hubs and reduce the centre boss ? Maybe worth seeing if you can source a secondhand set so the vehicle wouldn't have to be off the road. Paul h

The lathe isn't yet up and running as far as I know. I don't know if grunty can fit wheels in his lathe but I can vouch for the quality of his work and he's in Dursley. Worth sending a pm to

I've done them with a carbide bird/flap wheel/file before just keep checking them against the hub. Takes ages though.

From memory, there isn't a lot of metal on the centre boss of the hubs, ceartainly not at the back. It would end up a bit too thin I think.

The centre bore doesn't even need to touch the spigot on the hub (and doesn't on a lot of wheels, IE VW Transporters up until 1990) - once the wheel bolts are tightened it bears no load at all unless something has gone terribly wrong. 99% of aftermarket alloy use a cheapo plastic spigot ring that can barely hold it's own weight, let alone that of a car
