Hi All i have a small antique outboard motor, on the cast ali (i presume is ali) cylinder head there are two lugs which a small gravity fed petrol tank fixes to, thanks to parcel2go and T.N.T. those lugs have been snapped off! the lugs don't hold much weight as the tank only holds 1/2 a gallon at the most, but there will be some vibration through them from the cylinder head. so can these lugs be welded back? any recommendations for someone to do the job in the essex or kent regions. many thanks essexboys

Biggest problem is getting the head off a Seagull (fairly sure it was you after a Seagull?) without shearing the bolts - they run through the salt-water jacket - and I'm not sure the gasket would survive the heat of welding if you tried it in place. However, if you do manage to get the head off without snapping the bolts in the block I'm sure you could find a replacement head more cheaply than having it welded. Try ebay or saving old seagulls (both business and forum). What model is it? 40 or Century? Yes, AFAIK most cast ali can be welded. That said, I'm not entiely sure what variety of aluminium alloy the seagull bits are - and I understand that some are rather awkward to weld. Finally, it might be worth looking at Durafix rods. These allow low-temp 'welding' of ali with little more than a propane torch.

grab some "durafix" rods off ebay Usually about £20 for 4x45cm rods. Heat the alloy up to just under 400 degrees C, and "solder" with the rods I'm going to be building a chargecooler with these

wow! fast response times gent's thank you both very much, jrevillug, it's a 40 plus manufactured in 1961 and a short shaft, i have a long shaft silver century one, but i'm loathe to try and take the heads off either of them as i'm well aware of the problems involved doing that, but thanks for your help any way.
chairchild. my mate is a good welder (does it for a living) he has asked me to take the engine to him to have a look at, i'm really hoping the repair can be done with the head on, as it can be a pain in the a**e getting the head off, thank you for your help.

Cast Ali can be welded, we do it regularly. Personally I'd want the head on it's own due to both ease of manipulation and the heat sink effect from the large mass. But that's my preference and not your mates.
However, your biggest enemy here will be corrosion. I've welded many vintage pieces of Ali over the years, and every time it's oxidisation that kills the job

hi all once again thanks for the very helpful advice and suggestions, composimmonite, i have made a claim to the couriers, but they want to see pics of the damage and pics of the inside/outside of the box it was shipped in plus a receipt, none of thats a problem, and in fact i have submitted all the picture etc this evening, but i just know that they will find some loophole that get's them out of paying out. to all that have responded, i have been told that HS-2000 brazing rods work, these are also on ebay as a kit for £19.99 and i have ben advised to use MAPP gas as it burns hotter, so it looks as though i will be repairing this myself. once again thanks for the replies, i may even post up some pics of the damage and then some pics of the repair, just to let you know how i got on with it

^Re claiming off the couriers, its not all doom and gloom.
Some time ago I sent a BMW M30 camshaft via parcel farce. They thought it'd be hilarious to snap it in two.
In order for me to get compo, I had to describe the packaging I sent it in, describe what it was, provide an invoice for a replacement (over £400 plus VAT from BMW !!!) and give the adress of the recipient so they could send out an inspector (weather or not they did this I do not know). They also said in big letters if the packaging wasn't adequate They wouldnt pay.
Their standard insurance covered articles to the value of £100. Postal insurance for up to £500 was a couple of quid extra. Okay I got the cheque through for £100. I only sold the camshaft for £50 but theres a lesson here. £400 from parcel farce would've been tidy, though.
Anyway hope that helps.
Dave

just wanted to update this thread, thanks to all that gave answers and advise, i can report that parcel2go have now settled my claim for damage to my seagull outboard engine, they have settled for an amount of £95.65p...great news! the engine originally cost me £83.00 and the courier (parcel2go) fees were 14.00, so i very nearly covered my costs. now they have settled i can braze the lugs back on the head so i can mount the fuel tank, the process of claiming from parcel2go is a little frustrating as they want to deal with you only online, i had to show proof of the cost of the damaged engine so i took a screen shot of the ebay page i had too send pics of the damage caused and pics of the outside of the box the engine was in and of the inside of the box, to be fair, after the initial frustration of having to send all the required pics, and not being able to talk to someone on the phone, i have to say parcel2go dealt with the claim quite quickly and the cheque arrived in the post today.
so once again thanks to all who have helped me on this thread, what a wonderful place retro rides is, i possibly wouldn't have got better help anywhere else. many thanks essexboys
