OK friend kept asking me to change the clutch on their rover as it was slipping, anyway gave in and did it, fooking horrible job found clutch had failed due to oil seal in the gearbox had falled out of the carrier, used about a dozen pairs of gloves, anyway all done took it for a test drive worked perfect. Gave it back and they phone me oil everywhere, found the drive shaft seal had failed, told them was ok so long as they don't go far as it wasn't the lowest point in the gearbox, so they drove 400miles in it!, they told me they kept topping up the oil but now when in nuetral it is still in gear!! you can select all gears ok?
Did read something on internet about they don't like to be low on oil??
any ideas?

The first obvious thing is has one of the two gear change linkages popped off? The little ball and socket joints on the end can be deceiving and appear to have popped back on when they aren't quite engaged.
Given they've done >400 miles it is unlikely but worth checking to see if the gear stick is particilarly 'free' in one direction or the other: fwd+back=long link, side to side=short.
As for the GB, I've never managed to kill one like that so don't know their internal weak spots.
You used to be able to get replacement halfshaft seals from Honda dealers (horribly expensive £30 for a pair iirc), or Rimmer Brothers might be worth a look.
Oh and if you want to save some money, 10/40 engine oil is fine to use instead of the very expensive GB oil. You just need to change it every 30k miles.
Assuming you go for a replacement box they come up on the Rover forums fairly often, and on Metropower (VVC swap to the PG box from the original R65 that is in the 214 and Metro), but be aware the Metro box has a different gear linkage, and possibly final drive too. You should be able to get a good condition 214 R65 box for £50.

Had a look between the rain at the weekend, can find nothing wrong with the gear linkage . Looking on internet they are prone to jamming in gear and while l was fiddling with it it got jammed in reverse, bloody thing! looks like l'm going to have to put a gearbox in it when l should be working on my own car Dave where are you based l'm in Essex, pm me for price
