Thats not a bad plan at all, started my own project on my capri last year currently a bit snowed under with life getting in the way etc but glad i have started. got a clarke mig welder for about 300 pounds after asking advice on here and a decent auto darking helmet of the bay of e, this makes life alot eaiser. in my experence welding seems to be alot like Poker a day to learn a lifetime to master. Watched alot of stuff on you tube and read the haynes welding manual. Its about getting stuck in and having a go. Did lots of practise on panels from my mondeo engine donor car. Don t be scared and if you not happy grind out and have another crack. Sorry cant offer space as currently struggling myself in my mates single garage. There are lots of Good people on here especally the AREA 52 crew who are happy to share there skills and knowledge if you ask nice . Have not read you other thread about the track car but get something solid and buy a cage and the only welding might just be strengthing under said cage. Been on a few track days in my mates bmw and my old celica. If i was looking track car it would would be a Mr2 MK2 (for budget and less rot than mk1) , Also mid engined rwd lovely ness But almost anything can be fun remember Lighterness is free quickerness, the better the brakes the quicker you go and the longer you can stay out before fade, And get some decent tyres even if there good quality part worns I did one track day on really cheap rubber and was somewhat disadvantaged. if you get yourself sorted with space and a car could have a day out show you some basic welding (Trust me its very basic but I'm getting there)

If you don't have space and you want a track car, think about getting a kart. A 125 shifter kart comes in pretty cheap (look at £1500ish) and will be very fast indeed! There are track everywhere that do owner / driver days, they are between £30 and £45 for a whole day driving, you will need boots / helmet / gloves / and a suit, but all this will only be around £300 for new stuff and there are loads of second hand stuff available too. Tyres are cheap too, I use ex racer slicks, they only do one race on them and they will have another 100 laps or so left in them, perfect for ragging around a track Here I am with mine - And the build thread as I decided to use a non standard engine retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=othrmod&action=display&thread=104901&page=1

in my experence welding seems to be alot like Poker a day to learn a lifetime to master. Good analogy. I borrowed a welder and had a mate show me the basics, then just keep practicing gluing bits of old TV stand and dexion together. Still haven't had the bottle to attack an actual car with it yet.

First time I ever welded, it was putting in a mini floor. I forgot to turn on the gas, but I had no idea. I then progressed to my own machine a gasless job, that did a perfectly good job on a MK 1 Astra, remember I could hardly weld. A number of years ago I bought a second hand machine all singing and all dancing, to repair my Range Rover. I stuck at it and will attempt most things these days. Get onto it and stick with it, as someone has said if your not happy grind it off and start again, enjoy a new skill and enjoy learning.

Bristol. Get your sleeping bag, pillow and some beers packed and get your ar$e down this weekend and you'll have a lot of people happy to show you some welding techniques, tips and tricks. Kick off is around 1pm on Friday all the way through to about 6pm on Sunday night. Very little sleep in between but that's just the way it goes and no one seems to complain? If you think you live too far away, don't.
