Hi Folks, hoping you can help me with this one. My Skoda motor is hooked up to a Weber 40DCOE (as per the original Sport conversion...). It has been working great but on Sunday the throttle return spring snapped. It actually still ran really well (infact the car seemed noticably quicker!). All the same I decided to try and replace the spring so ordered a proper DCOE throttle return spring. This arrived this morning but it is too small to fit in the same place as it was previously (as in picture). SAM_0527_edit by Rob'll Pics, on Flickr So my questions: - 1/ Where is the throttle return spring supposed to attach and what's the right type of spring to fit?
- 2/ In amongst all of this my air filter fell off and now needs replacing. Personally I quite like the look of "socks" over the trumpets but is there any advantage between the different air filter options?
- 3/ Does anyone know an Weber experts who can tune the carb for me - preferrably not too far from home (Aberystwyth, Wales).
Many thanks one & all!

The springs you bought are to fit the weber throttle linkage kits and will be shorter than the one shown in your picture. I think you will just have to search for a universal spring of the same length. I wouldn't use filter socks as they don't work as well as full filter (less surface area). You can buy replacement K&N elements to fit the filter assembly you have, they aren't expensive. Most rolling road tuners will be familliar with Weber DCOE tuning. Not sure of who is close to you though. Hope this helps

I understand the socks don't flow or filter as well as a well-maintained K+N - and when the engine is mountd in the boot decent filtering is essential.
Imp specialists only recommend paper element or oiled cotton (eg K+N) filters for that reason - running without a filter has been called an "Instant Rebore Kit" due to the amount of dust kicked up into the engine bay.

Hello Rob, Whe I adapted the manifold and carb to use the standard cable I just took a spring from my universal spring set.
You can get nice looking filters off ebay reletively cheaply (just search DCOE filter / weber filter etc). As mentioned, you don't want socks really.
I thought it ran very well with the Weber jetted as it is. Does it need retuning?

Something like this then? Shame about the socks because they look good but there we are. Kieran, it runs really well but the engine has just been rebuilt and I was under the impression it'd be good practice to have it checked? Wouldn't mind knowing how much power it is producing too. Thanks for all the help chaps.

don't waste your money on the full K&N as your top and bottom plates are ok. The filter element can be bought separately for around £20. If you measure it up (Length, height and depth) I can get you a definate price.

It certainly does all that, I don't think there is anything wrong with it - just wanted to double check really. Its a lovely motor.

If it goes as well as it did when I drove it last I'd leave it alone. Also when I checked the CO and HC on the MOT emmisions tester after I'd rebuilt the engine it would have passed the emmisions test with ease if I'd have been doing an MOT test. I might have the metal parts you need for the air filter.

I shall listen to your words of wisdom, but I still want to rolling road it. Its still very exciting having anything mildly worth rolling roading...
