OH YESH!!!! Amazing having a leaf though something like this, the sheer variety off stuff all in one mag would be unknown today.... Brand new FSO pick-up straight in the workshop for modding, 20 year old 'bangers' transformed into Gassers, interviews with darts champs, and fashion shoots of how to look cool in your corvette.... A whole other world.

I love old mags. Next time I got to my parents house I'll have to have a dig for some old copies of SM and other car mags.
Is that issue No1 or am I being thick?

Yup, issue #1, from May 1979, back when I was just a rug-crawler...

Brill isn't it?! look like rose tinted gigs are right. I was leafing through early 90's SM's thinking those days are gone sort of, just us with the best/worst of old skool/new skool modern mix now. A Insurance feature of modded motors interesting, featuring a 23 Y/O Rob Beardmore in twinked Minor with approx £300 insurance and a 17 Y/O in a modded but std engined 1200 something? less than £500 things have not changed loads and loads but looking at the past is wierd.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Your postal service must be shocking. I've heard of subs arriving late but c'mon!!
Actually, I have that very issue complete with the sticker- it's actually a few months older than me!

I actually bought that first issue when it was new...although I was only 8 at the time! I haven't got my original copy though, but I have of course got at least one replacement!

I was 1 year and a month old when that came out. I might have puked on it in my dad's hands and spoilt his read

That mag is one the reasons I lurk here...I enjoy looking at anything built before 1980 ,and yes there did seem to be a lot more variety in what people "built up" in those far off days ... Around that time I had a work mate who collected old US hot Rod mags, something unheard of then.He must also be one the few collectors in the world who has an "original " set of Hot rod and Rod and custom from the 40's and 50's right to the end of the real ones in 1980.(after that they went really commercial) . One thing that must be remembered too,we didn't have as much money or even the chance to earn money back in the 70's .Thanks to easy credit etc it's a lot simpler to build your dream today than back then.

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

Henry High Rise was parked under a tarpaulin near where I used to live, he might even be there still. I'm pretty sure that SM did a follow up feature about 7 or 8 years ago, about the 'revised' HH, now slammed and tubbed? Could be mistaken though?
