	something in my ignition system has stopped working since being laid up for a while. When I turn the key I get a light click from the solenoid but no action. Battery is fully charged and I have a good earth It's a push button type solenoid, and when I push the button nothing happens either, I suspect it's the component that is at fault here. Obviously I don't want to bypass the solenoid permanently, but to rule out any issue with the starter motor is it a: possible to start the car by jumping from battery live to the starter ? I would say yes. b: safe-ish to do so without frying myself or the car? not so sure. ta folks

	Check with a mulimeter that there is a live feed to the starter when the solenoid is pressed etc. If there is a feed then give the starter itself a quick whack with a hammer as the brushes may just need freeing off.

	Not to be recommended but I've started cars with duff solenoids by shorting the terminals with a spanner, screwdriver etc. You get loads of sparks, the metal trys to weld itself to the terminals and also gets hot VERY quick. As I say not to be recommended except in an absolute emergency. Better to bump start to get to a motor factors and buy a new solenoid. First off however is double check earths including the actual solenoid as it could have corroded contact with the bodywork. Have you checked the starter isn't jammed ? On the end of an old bendix type there is a bit of the armature on the rear that is exposed with a square section so you can turn it with a spanner. Sometimes it is covers with a little plate. If jammed you can normally turn anticlockwise to unjam the bendix gear. Paul.

	Back in the day my dad used to carry a horse shoe shaped bit of bar with some garden hose over it for just that job

	Cheers, will recheck all of my earths, but it all seemed ok. I cant bump start as it's an auto. I know that means I shouldn't realy have the push start solenoid, but It makes life easier to tinker under the bonnet . Will check the starter to see if thats jammed too. ta
