I've got a 1.3 1989 mk2 golf at the moment and my mate's 2.0 1996 mk3 golf gti 8v engine and box etc might available
whats required to fit this engine and assciatioed stuff to my mk2?
will i need to change the subframe to a mk2 'tall/big block' one or a mk3 one?
plus information on anything else i need to modify/use plus wiring etc
cheers

to be honest mate, its not worth the time. you may as well get hold of a 1.8 8v out a mk2 golf gti that's running k-jet. it will be easer to fit and get running and I'm 90% sure they are the same power?

Easier still to just a get a whole Mk3 GTI. They have just about hit bottom pricewise.

There are lots of things to consider...
1) what age is your mk2? if it is pre 1989 and has the hazard switch on the dash NOT behind the steering wheel then you have CE1 electrics, this makes doing engine conversions a lot more involved as ideally it is better to swap the entire fuse box for a mk3 item
2) you need more than just the engine, you will require the entire engine loom, the ECU, the key, the lock, the ignition barrel, the immobaliser transponder/halo/receiver - or pay £75-100 to have the ECU uncoded.
3) you will need to upgrade the brakes and suspension, the 2.0 8v is a lot heavier than your 1.3
4) The mk3 subframe can be used on the mk2 but the front cross member and engine mount will need to be from a mk2 golf/corrado
5) To run the engine on fuel injection you will also need the mk2/3 fuel injection fuel tank, in tank pump and under car pump / or run a Facet style electric pump in the bay.
In short, in less your 1.3 shell is in very good condition i'd sooner buy a mk2 GTI as there are still some good ones around for not a lot of money.
