Had both, and if it was only for a fun runaround it would have to be the Volvo. Just make sure the electrics work, including the lights. There is a good forum that will explain most problems away, like wrong sidelight bulbs prevent the headlights going up and down, etc, but generally it should do over 30mpg, mine averaged 34, and not break the bank to buy a good one. Longer term, the SAAB is a better looking smoker. Loads of room, with an enormous boot, but it is a heavy old girl, and shockers and handbrakes are known casualties. Also they are very sought after, so if it looks too good a deal to be true, it probably is. I got an average of 22mpg, so not one to be doing 24k miles a year in... Either way, you aren't going to be dissapointed. BB

As for above comment, sorry but IMO thats plums! And in my opinion volvo 480s are plums but each to there own eh? As for 180 bhp from just a modded ecu..... thats some chip no offence like The standard 480 turbo only runs 7 psi of boost and has the ignition heavily retarded after 4000 rpm and it produces 120 bhp, the ECU mod I have by Richard from the 480 forum lets the car run 14 psi of boost and alters the ignition so its not so heavily retarded on his car it made 170 bhp. The car feels completely transformed feels like its still making power when it hit the rev limiter sometimes. This guy know what hes talking about his 480 check out the pics of his 480 turbo with supercharger volvo480.northernscum.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10922If my car was n/a i could understand that a claim of 50 extra bhp would be crazy! But on turbo charged cars chips/ecu mods or remapping the ecu can net massive gains in power. Escort rst for instance standard 132bhp, chipped on a healthy engine can see up to 185 bhp same on a Sierra Cosworth standard 204 bhp, chipped 280 bhp? i know often chipped cars are a little down on quoted power but every car is different. I like saab 900 they are an quality retro ride, but I have had loads of fun in my 480 turbo and simply saying they are "cheap and nasty in comparison" is a bit of a crass statement! Have you ever driven a 480 Mr. slammed66? sorry to get all school play ground theres is nothing i like better than a good discussion

Volvos are cheap and nasty in comparrison and wont get anywhere near the mileage of a 900 As for above comment, sorry but IMO thats plums! So when you strip your engine down at 250,000 miles, look at the factory fresh honing marks on the bores etc. and put it straight back together we'll agree that they can both do reasonable mileages And you said yourself they're cheap

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Thanks everyone for such a good debate about this, I'm still undecided however as to which one I'll have. TBH at the price that I'm hoping to get them for there is every chance that I'll end up buying both but the missus will go nutty if I do. Can't say that I blame her, she keeps telling me that 14 cars are too many - if I expand my fleet to 16 I guess she'll have every right to get mardy.
Still I am liking both! Hmmm, the idea of getting the 480 chipped sounds quite good too.
Perhaps if the guy who's coming to look at the 205 this weekend actually buys it then I'll get away with having both.
I'll keep you all updated on how it goes.
Oh, any issues with the Saab's auto box?

900 auto is an old 3-speed borg-warner jobbie - generally reliable..
All I remember about 480's is constant reliabilty nightmares. Nearly killed volvo apparently...But I guess any left must be OK now, right??
OK I have a saab bias, but I do love anything with pop-up headlights.. ;D

I just bought my saab 900 t16 last month and Few simple mods is all it takes and you can be scooby killing too ;D My,my thats quite a bold claim. I take it by that, you mean a Justy ;D ;D True, it is a bold claim but a proven one. On the return journey from collecting mine I wasted a classic imprezza estate (chav spec) and a bug eye imprezza but theese were both at motorway speeds. I wouldnt risk a hard launch in first with my 900 or even suggest that I could match one round the twisties but from 70 to 120 its a different story. don't think a justy could reach 70 could it Have a word on the uk saab forum to see how many imprezza beaters there are if your a non believer

(K) Volvo 480 Turbo (chipped to 170 bhp) - It's broken, quite badly! ... I've only ever had experience of a 480 - and I was suitably impressed - I rememebr it as nippy (for a volvo), incredibly well specced - lovely comfortable leather seats, excellent driving position etc etc... I really think you couldn't go wrong with a 480, as long as it isn't rusty - as has been said, chances are it will have been looked after. However, I'd go for the saab, 'cos I've always liked the shape, the history, the 'alternative-ness' of them. I thought I'd 'spotted' Danb's at a show, but it was a different one...

Quick update - Got outbid on the fleabay for the 480 but seller has contacted me as he thinks the winner might be a messer - if so it's mine Didn't get to see the Saab last night as I had to pick up some Speedlines for another 205 from Richmond instead and ran out of time (damn rugby traffic!). Will be looking at the Saab tonight.

Having driven Mr Slammed66's Saab I would imagine it would certainly uset Scooby owners. Specially as it cost about a hundredth of their motors (no, seriously!) As for which one to go for, personally I like the look of the 480 more and nearly bought a NA about 8 years ago. Smart as in black. The 900 at the back (especially the 2-door) is ugly as sin and it looks like the designer just couldn't be 4rsed to finish it off. Not much to choose between them though, think it is going to boil down to personal preferance.
