Hmm, I'm looking at getting one of either a 92 Reg Volvo 480 or an '89 Saab 900 Turbo. Both for about the same price. I've seen and tested the 480 and it seems fine, haven't investigated the Saab yet.
What would you recommend? What should I look out for (particularly on the Saab)?
Both will be kept standard, I just want to use one as a runabout for a few months so which can be modded easiest won't be an issue.
As you know I'm currently tearing about in a 205 1.9GTi so I'm looking for something that's going to be fairly fun.

Depends what you want. The Saab will be quicker in standard form than the Volvo, but will also be a lot more nickable! The 480 can be cheaply and reliably chipped though through a guy in the owners club. I've had a 480 turbo, as well as two normally aspirated ones, and I love them.
On the Volvo, look out for dodgy electrics. They are prone to lots of niggling electrical problems. If an electric window doesn't work it's almost certainly time for a new motor, there's a small plastic component that breaks on them. Rot wise, rear arches are the worst place, but they also go on the doors. Boots nearly all leak, if you've found a dry one you're lucky. Headlinings can start to sag (as can the Saabs), and the rear light clusters will nearly always fade. They also tend to suffer with dodgy connections to the starter motor, and it's a pig to get at (fairly easy on the non-turbo cars though). Also, watch out for an iffy clutch, they can be stupid money to have replaced, or a pig of a job again if you're diy.
I hope this helps.

Out of a 480 turbo and a 900 turbo. 900 all the way. Yes they have weak gearboxes and some weak rust spots that rich mentioned. But you can slide a Volvo wagon in the boot with the back seats up (on the hatchback models), the camchain can last 100's of K miles, they don't have a superstupid computer controlling everything and they don't have silly french fuel injection system. also 480s rust bad at the back end.
I like the look of 480s but would you buy a Swedish car, built and designed by the dutch using french engines and electronics?

I just bought my saab 900 t16 last month and oh my god what a car! Few simple mods is all it takes and you can be scooby killing too ;D try here www.uksaabs.co.uk/index.phpso far touch wood and all that ive had no troubles dispensing around 220 horses through the front wheels and my engine/box have covered 165k which is nearly run in Go for the saab! Volvos are cheap and nasty in comparrison and wont get anywhere near the mileage of a 900

Volvo Cause I own a 480 Turbo, plus points..... Strong renault engine can take loads of miles The build quality is good, rear arches rust (like all car of the 80s) but volvo spend ££££ on rust proofing Can take loads of punishment (Trust me I have tryed to kill mine several times) They have a low market value so even low mileage tresured cars cost peanuts Not your average hot hatch so many have not been thrashed Bad points.... Dodgy electrics (easily sorted with a soldering iron) More leaks than the Titanic ;D (check the boot and all foot wells) parts are pricey (but I cant imagine saabs parts are any cheaper) As for driving as standard the 120 bhp don't feel quick as the ignition is heavily retarded above 4,000 rpm. However the engine is torquey. I know you said not modding but several people can modify the ECU for around £80 to up power to about 160-170 bhp Volvos are cheap and nasty in comparrison and wont get anywhere near the mileage of a 900 As for above comment, sorry but IMO thats plums!

Saab. I had a 9000 a few years ago. It was superb. The old 900 was a good car. Pre-GM Saab rocked for build quality. A guy at work had the 480 and I wasn;t impressed with it. Next question then, Daphne vs Celeste?

I had a 9000 too a while ago, it was a good car but I always preferred the look of the 900. Strangely I wasn't that keen on the Volvo when it came out but it's grown on me since, there's something very 80's about the whole feel of it.
I'm not sure which I'll go for, it's more likely to be the 480 as I've seen it, tested and it seems fine. Only thing is the guy refused my first (fairly derisery) offer.
I'll be having a look at the 900 on Sunday (providing it's still there), the paint work on it looks shredded but apart from that the guy tells me it is sound. Only other drawback is that it is an auto and I much, much, much prefer manuals.
I'll let you know which I get.

Hi All. This is my first post on here. Great Place... Some tasty motors. Just thought I would reply to this one. I had a 900 for 4 years. The Classic 900's will run for ever. The running costs are low compared to other motors that I have owned. The gearboxes are weak, but in 4 years I only had minor problems with crunching in second. I found with the modifications that I made, that short shifting from first and second helped. There was no need to run to the redline in the bottom two gears. Third is where it really runs... Have a look at www.900aero.com APC mods are easy to run 1 bar boost. Here is a picture of my 900. I wish I still had her... Go for a 900 carlsson or a 900 Ruby... You will never look back. I ran a modified red APC (1.1 bar), all aluminium blackstone intercooler, full Jetex 2.5 inch exhaust, forge blow off valve. Any more and you need to seriously look at upgrading the gearbox. Mine was running approx 210bhp. Overtaking is where the 900's come into their own... Gear boxes that can be used are chill cast 4 speed boxes. These are apparantly much stronger, but I never got to this point. Thanks. Dan.
