One of BLMC's forgotten cars??? When we were poking around a 6 acre paddock of rusting and derelict cars, I stumbled across a couple of these beasties... Tasman Kimberley Pretty bizarre things, used a transverse 6cyl engine with twin SU's, possibly an Aussie/NZ only thing I think, as they were kind of supposed to be a competitor in the "large" car market. Unsure of engine type... or capacity... or anything. Can anyone tell me more??? Don't even know why I posted this, but I kind of have a strange interest in them... kind of strange, a transverse straight six.

There's a couple of the Austin Kimberley's in at the local wreckers here, would hazard a guess that there'd be a couple or the Tasman too I imagine.

BMC did do some quite cool Down-Under-Only versions of their stuff. There's a six cylinder version of what is normally only a four cylinder Farina (Austin Cambridge etc) over here. Bigger engines for traversing huge distances I suspect.

I've recently seen a couple of the Aussie only Austin 1300 saloon with a boot. Is it called the Apache? I forget.
I have had a thing to own a P76 for years, since they were new I think. When I was like 6 I thought they looked like a Lagonda, later I just decided it was the ugliest car evar made and therefore I had to own one.

Indeed, they're hideous, though they were apparently good.. in some regard, though I'm not sure off hadn what that was. Used to be alot about now I only see one every 3 months or so. Shame really, it's always nice to park next to a car that makes yours look less bizarrely shaped. ;D

Yeah I'm sure the Kimberly was an Auzzie landcrab.... BMC did alot of "new" models for down under that used BMC parts bin parts, the Apachie/Austin 1300 mentioned used Triumph 2000 rear lights.

South African i think, "The Austin Apache was designed by Michelotti in 1970, alongside the almost identical Austin Victoria, and was produced by Leyland South Africa at their Blackheath plant from 1971 until the mid Seventies." Imported ones,

Don't forget here in the UK we did get Landcrabs and Princesses with the transverse straight-6.
Those Apaches are funny things aren't they?
Think I spotted a Freeway-type Farina in that big Oz auction listing, may have been a Wolseley?

Another interesting Aussie BMC was the Morris Nomad - a 5 door (hatchback) ADO 16 (11/1300), launched in the late 60's. It had a Maxi 1500 engine. Pics on www.austin-rover.co.uk/index.htm?ado16ausf.htm It would have interesting if BMC GB had bought it out here, particularly as it was designed in the UK. It looked a lot nicer than the Maxi IMHO. Wander if the gearchange worked?! The Austin Victoria shape saloon would be been another interesting might have been, as it was a mixture of BMC and Triumph styling! Seth and like minded Farina fans should check out www.austin-rover.co.uk/index.htm?akafarinaf.htmlots of weird stuff like a Riley 4/72 pick up made in Argentina!!!!

Cool, thanks for the links/info. Another oddball BMC product, my old man had one of these with triple SU's, head work, cam, extractors etc...
