This is going to be very difficult to sell as ive had this car over five years now and done a lot with it. However I simply don't have the time or effort to drive it regularly or do any of the smaller things that it needs every now and again any more.
Overall, its a very high mileage example but has had nearly everything replaced in my ownership making it a robust car again.
This is an original GT squareback, not a conversion. They only made the GT in this bodystyle from the factory for less than a year. howmanyleft.com shows there are only 69 of them still registered on UK roads last year, which makes them fairly rare in my opinion.
Being a 1991 model it is an early spec mk3, has all of the original GT trimmings such as the black headliner, 120mph clocks, red striped bumpers etc.
Engine wise, it had a full top end rebuild three years ago, which included a replacement low mileage head (as the cam bearings were a bit scuffed on the original) with brand new valves etc all new seals all round and all electric sensors (potentiometer, temp senders, hall sender). It has had new spark plugs, leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm and ignition pack in the last 18 months. It has been running an aftermarket cone style air filter on a homemade adaptor pretty much since I had it, but I still have the original GT induction setup stored which will be included in sale. It has an ECU chip from clubpolo, but I have the original chip which will be included in sale. The backbox is a bit of a mess as its a universal bike-can style exhaust that we adapted to fit a few years back. Its perfectly sealed but doesnt look too pretty from underneath. It does have a removable baffle which takes it from legal to borderline illegal, decibel-wise (i have a meter if you want to test this). Engine bay has been cleaned up over the years with all sorts of parts including a colour coded cam cover and a replacement set of fan guard stickers. Alternator and engine mounts are around two years old. Had an oil change with its MOT this weekend and has always been regularly serviced.
Chassis wise, its lowered on the popular philj 60mm spring and shock kit. It has a GED front bar, uprated ARB mount rubbers. Track and tie rods, lower track arms and the steering rack have all been replaced in the last two years. It is running 7.5J 15" Lenso alloys which were roughly home-sprayed silver a few years ago, they’re pretty tatty but they hold the road well. One of the tyres got an advisory on the latest MOT as it was a little thin in one area. Pads and discs were replaced a couple of years ago and have done minimal mileage. Rear drums were cleaned and new rear shoes were replaced at the same time, although one of the rear drums sticks every now and again. This is because it sits quite a lot though and is solved by regular driving.
Body wise, its tatty but solid. The paint is the worst part of the car in my opinion. Many years of motorway driving on thin silver vw paint has rubbed the laquer off in many places. The roof for example is completely bare and just has its topcoat left. There are many dents and rough patches on the main body, however rust is minimal. There is surface rust most prominently at the bottom of the passenger door and along some of the feature lines of the car that have had the most wear, but it’s all fairly minor and can be sanded down to metal and treated. The drivers’ wing is quite rusty around the arch lip, but the drivers’ side was recently replaced with a rust free resprayed alternative quite easilly so I would see the same required here to fix this. Usual rust spots like the tailgate glass and battery tray base are amazingly rust free.
It has the original black bumpers with red pinstripe. Front bumper has a mk1 golf cl chin spoiler attached at the bottom which ive not seen on any other mk3s. It also has a mk3 golf 5dr rear spoiler on the top of the bootlid. Side strips have been removed. It has a debadged grille (original with black badge included in sale), tinted headlamps, clear tinted indicators, clear side repeaters, colour coded eyebrow, delocked passenger side handle (original locking one included in sale). Black tinted indicator section on rear clusters. Passenger side mirror removed and a carbon fibre on the drivers’ side with a homemade adaptor plate. It did have a very 90s dotted fadeout sticker running all the way along the bottom between the arches. This has been taken off in places, but I'm sure I have a couple of rolls which could replace the missing bits somewhere.
On the inside, the original GT seats are present although the drivers’ side outer lower bolster has collapsed. A strip down and new foam will fix this. It is all in a very early 90s grey with blue details, but with the GT black headliner. There are some marks and stains but they all come out with a good clean. The interior is one of the best parts of the car in my opinion. It currently has a snap off steering wheel boss with a sparco steering wheel. Original GT wheel will be included in sale. It also has shown in pictures a yellow OMP gearknob. This will not be included in sale but I have a range of alternatives and will include the original gearknob in the sale. It also has a lever extension which can be easilly removed. The rear parcel shelf has been replaced by a handmade wooden one to hold two very heavy 6x9s speakers. The original parcel shelf will also be included in the sale. I bought some of the original boot side trim carpets from clubpolo a few years ago which were an option not included on this car, but make a nice addition. It currently has plain black mats with a metal plate on the drivers mat, but I also have the original big rubber vw mats which will be included with the sale. I fitted a wiring kit which runs a sub and amp in the boot. The JVC mp3-CD head unit, wiring and rear speakers will be included, but I am reluctant to include the sub and amp in the sale. Front speakers are fantastic JBLs and I also have another set of brand new Pioneer speakers which will fit up front which I can include in the sale.
Bad points -
Tappets are slightly noisy, probably from a lack of miles put on in the last few years. Easy to replace and doesnt affect current running condition.
Paint and body is very tatty. Surface rust in many places but can be cured.
Slight water leak easilly fixed by a new thermostat housing.
Slight oil leak from one of the pressure senders, once again easilly replaced.
One tyre needs replacing fairly soon, had advisory on recent MOT.
Good points -
Still pulls like a train, as a small 8 valve in a lightweight car should. Great fun to drive and sticks to the road like a go kart. ~80bhp to ~800kg.
Lots of recent replacement parts means it needs little mechanical work.
Many aftermarket or optional extra parts as well as spares included.
Despite tatty appearance very solid straight body.
Original GT squareback, of a supposed ~70 left on UK roads
Theres a full history thread of this car on polo3.co.uk. Any questions please ask.
Not interested in p/ex as I am selling due to lack of use.
