May I pick your brains gentlemen
Car belongs to a mate, its 51 plate, 2 litre turbodiesel TDCi, manual, estate.
Its down on power, and when the engine cover is lifted theres a thick coating of carbon/soot everywhere (a good 1/2 a millimetre thick, enough to run your finger through) which seems to be originating from the turbo.
Its chucking out black smoke on accelaration
Any thoughts?
TIA
Dave

Wont see him till weds, but could get piccies then. Basically, lift the engine cover and everythings coated in soot. Thicker around the turbo area.
Car has not been messed with, and has 140k on the clock

Maybe the manifold/exhaust is leaking before it enters the turbo. that would explain the lack of power and soot under the engine cover.
Have you heard it running?

definitely a leaking manifold, turbo or gasket fail.
Whatever the whole lot needs stripping and cleaning as the soot contains acids which can do more harm.

check the egr, this can cause massive buildup of curse word in the intakes.

It could be a leaky boost hose.

as said , egr is a common problem on turbo diesel engines , the egr and the inlet manifold etc all clog up , get it plugged in to a diagnostics as well as clean these,.
