i'm working on a truck, its a 97 l200, 2wd, which i've dropped and rimmed (i'll get pics up soon)
the thing it looks cool, but its got a horrible tractor engine in it, in the form of an n/a 2.5 diesel with about 50hp, and its geared for haulling a ton of bricks.. both are not acceptable.
so i thought it would be cool to drop something in it. SO.. do i stay diesel, change it to petrol?
i can easily drop the turbo'd motor in, which would be cheap, but is it really going to make that much difference? how easy is it to chuck a bigger turbo on it?
any other alternatives? i'm thinking buying a complete car thats rotted or rear ended is probably the best idea as you know youve got everything there.
Any thoughts?

Sounds wicked, got any pics? So much room in truck you could stick what ever you fancy in. Lexus v8/bmw v8 would be cheapest as you can get full cars for £500-£1000 I'm trying to get a Hilux atm, been looking at sticking a 3s-ge from an mr2 in with a 6 speed is200 g/box but it's not as cheap as v8 but I'm not keen on auto's, plus I like revy 4pots

This has been one of my recent daydreams... the best I came up with is a V6 from a Jag S-type. A reasonable power to juice ratio and a manual box, also with the right pipes it could sound lovely. Lots about and either 200 or 240bhp for the 2.5/3.0 litre versions. Based ultimately on Mazda stuff I think, so shouldn't be unreliable Oh yeah, and S-types are cheap as chips atm. Depends if it's a daily and how much you drive it? I'm interested whatever you go with, I've decided my next car will be a 2wd J pickup

Grab yourself a vw 1.9 Td, shove that in, along with a slightly tweaked mechanical pump, and a nicely sized VNT turbo.
Depending on your turbo, you can easily expect boost to start at about 1700rpm, AND have over 180Bhp! Plus, as long as you're not fully loaded, you can expect mpg to be in the high 40s!
you can literally - have your cake and eat it

Grab yourself a vw 1.9 Td, shove that in, along with a slightly tweaked mechanical pump, and a nicely sized VNT turbo. On what gearbox? Your suggestion is FWD but the OP's L200 is RWD. It can be done, but I'd recommend suggesting a full RWD package if thinking of FWD based engines as an option. My money would go on a Lexus V8. I woulnd't care if it was auto and you can get so much for so little. Cars from around £300 and you'll make most of that back weighing it all in once the engine/box/loom is out. Such cracking engines and in something like your L200 it'll be more economical than in the original car, so expect mid 20's up to early 30's. Plus petrol is a good few £ cheaper per tank than diesel.

Volvo turbo lumps are cheap and can make lots of power, BMW, merc etc etc.
A lot depends how confident you'll be with wiring in the ECU and any antitheft gubbins thats on the donor car.
an old yank V8 on a carb and auto box would sound great and they are not all expensive or difficult to wire in.
actually the volvo may be a sensible idea, the 940s about the same age as mine still had a live axle but come with the strongest gearbox, LSD axles are not that hard to fidn either and you'll need one on a pickup.
the whole package will work well together and be geared right and you can grab a whole car for 500 odd quid.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

Well, if the OP doesn't fancy the challenge of making one fit: 2.1 XUD engine (or the more common 1.9 - but the 2.1 has approx 10% more power) Pug 306 HDi flywheel + clutch pressure plate Ford Galaxy clutch friction plate LDV Pilot spigot bearing, and gearbox Output shaft is the common "ford" pattern, and with minor fuelling mods and boost increase, will see you an easy 110Bhp. bosch pump, and again, bigger turbo - easily 180Bhp. Any further than that and you risk conrods learning to fly... out the side of the engine There's also the Merc 300D (turbo version) but that weighs as much as a small village, and gets about the same mpg as a large v8... so don't even consider that, unless you want a derv that'll do 400Bhp+
