Been ON IT!!! Yesterday was a mission to get the engine bay pretty much complete, I did take pics on my phone but it crashed and I lost them all, so I went and took a few pics with the camera this morning so you get the idea. First up, fit the 22mm master cylinder I removed from the donor and painted up a few weeks ago needed fitting, I chose the cleanest out of the 3 resevoirs I had... Next job was to mount the ECU somewhere more fixed, I tried mounting it to the old PB ECU cage, but that failed, so for the time being its cable tied down under the scuttle tray, not pretty, but you can't see it... Also fitted my spangly stainless rocker bolts Then I had the messy task of swapping a PAS pipe and resevoir over to the better fitting mk2 items, looks much better. I was going to sort this out today... So that I could get some fluid in it and give it brakes but the rain and general laziness says no. On another note I did put all the front end back together properly and took a load of "I'm happy with that" pictures!

Black one is completely standard bar spax adjustables and valver rear lights. The blue one is also standard bumper wise, but nowhere else!

Well well whats been happening today? I got a few hours on it and after some frantic googling/frustration on my mk3 clocks not working, I found that you have to bridge D8/E2 and you get life in the mk3 clocks! So a celebratory picture... So then all the dash could go back in now I'm done with the wiring in the car I am however a bit annoyed with how the clocks sit, I read up on it and took the advice to trim the upper inner lining of the dash and moved the right hand support bracket over and its still a bit poo tbh... You may also spot my mk3 stalks (had to trim the top column cowling) and I put the early mk3 wheel back in that I had put in the GTI (but I stole it from this car anyway). In other news I'm having some difficulty in getting the engine to run correctly, the idle is wierd and the engine revs aren't too quick to come back down, most likely caused by the monumental vacuum leak that I can't find!!! Sounds like its coming from the inlet manifold somewhere, I've investigated it, took the ISV off and bunged the holes, checked the little vac hoses, checked the servo vac hose and I just can't find it! Any ideas?

Is it worth trying the old WD40 trick? With the engine running, spray various bits one at a time. The bit that's sucking in air should suck in a load of wd40 and the engine revs should rise momentarily as the engine burns it off. it may help locating the leak.

hmm I'm willing to try that, only trouble is a lot of the time the idle is all over the place, so identifying whether the revs rise due to WD intake or just vac leak is going to be difficult

The black gti is lowered 40mm on spax adjustables and the blue GL is dropped an unknown amount on coilovers. I have to say the handling on the black one is excellent. I've had 2 1.3s and always said I wouldn't have another 4 speed one! They're not as slow as you'd expect but if you can afford to insure one I'd always go for the real thing, unless your like me and keep putting different engines in 1.8 GLs haha

Well today I got the brakes filled and bled and took it for a short blast down the road and the conclusion fromuthat 1st drive is that it has a lot of low down torque :-)

Proper 90's Britlook going on now, low, big bumpers, flat faced wheels! Love it. Considering I have been putting Performance VW since 1998, have seen the scene change, but you have to like a clean 5 door on big wheels! Now put that VR6 in it and your finished!

D'ya know those audi wheels are only 16s, looked a bit small on the mk3, but actually look quite big on the mk2! But I'm loving how they fit, the little bit of stretch on the tyres sits just right, and finally with smaller tyres I have some more steering lock without catching the arches! Payday today, so some purchases are being made to get this finished

They look big for 16's I had the 17 inch versions on my VR6 they would look massive and you would end up running 185 35 17's on those to look good. I really like it mate good work. I miss having vw's

Not especially difficult, but the few times I've done it, I've had a donor car. Theres that many rotten mk2s about that finding a cheap donor isn't that hard or expensive. If you do decide to fit a GTI engine, just make sure you get one with the right loom, save massive headaches later on. If your car has the hazard light switch on the dash, then your donor needs it there too, otherwise it'l be on the steering coloumn, which makes it a 90 spec loom. In addition to the engine you also need the main fuel pump under the car which the carbies don't have, so you have to modify the fuel pipes to suit, and you need the associated loom...

Feeling even more pleased with myself today. Got a 90 spec red stripe interior for the driver all fitted, and got some of the ultraviolets in the GL. Need to get some pics in the daylight though. Also picked up a 4 lamp driver grille and spots for the driver, and a glovebox for the GL to replace the broken one

Bet you all thought this had disappeared into the 6th circle of hell? lol Well no, the GL had its 1st real outing today in 9 months! Small fail, an anti roll bar drop link (which is stubbornly siezed in the end of the ARB, left it overnight soaking some oil), one tyre has a cut on the inside sidewall, and the rear foglight switch has died, I didn't have time to wire up a temporary one before the MOT, so a new one is on order. So, re-test next week, tax, then to Elsecar on bank holiday monday!
