Good to see another 944 on here, message me if you need a hand as I'm relatively new to doing mechanical bits but recently changes my belts, head gasket, oil cooler seals, lifters etc myself, its an easy car to work on yourself if you have the space and time, plus bookmark 'clarks garage' as the workshop manual there is amazing. I also have a spare 70k mile engine for grabs if you need spares, I'm happy to part with it for next to nothing, message me if interested. got a link to clarks garage?? Whereabouts are you located mate?? I'm happy to part with beer tokens for getting work done on the drive rather than going to a garage

Nice purchase Steve, glad to see you back into Retro things again, I hope you manage to hold onto this for a while? I have to say that I'm not too keen on the black rof at all, but otherwise it looks like a nice solid base for a good bit of retro motoring. I hope you manage to get the clutch and timing belt issues sorted? Looking forward to seeing what you do with it, but most of all...ENJOY it! Hi to WendyWooWoo too.

Founds the clarks garage.. will sign up later, looks very good..
Bruce - Cheers mate.. Trucks gone, so this is staying, toying with the idea of making it sorn and a proper project for a change.. Things have steadied off now too, so with the financed passat gone, more pennies every month too get things done (just works still quiet tho)
I need to take a step back this time, think things through rather than bull in china shop and then get the hump and sell it.. this defo feels liek the right car for me tho - I've got that feeling that I haven't had since i sold My bay window panel van 10 years back
first direction is sorted, take it to the local specialist monday and get their opinion on everything else, is it worth saving, or should it become a donor and then get another to make a corker from.. So will go for that idea on monday..
I'm actually looking forward to working on it myself, but need to sort somewhere as the gravel drive is a nightmare for working on, thinking some old lino rolled over the gravel for working on could do.. lol
I'd like the black roof more if it wasnt down the door pillars, the guy had it done black as finding the matching red would have been hard - yeah, matching to faded red would be hard, but not impossible.. just polish the rest so it all matches..

Thankfully I didn't need a new water pump, just a full front seal kit, belts, rollers etc etc...I'm just up the road from Wokingham if you fancy a bit of company collecting that engine.

I do like the 944, but don't know much about them. It's in the shadow of the 911, but I like underdogs. Tidy 944's have a real air of class about them. It'll be good to see what you do with this.

Looks good buddy, i have to say i think i'd polish it and repaint the roof, faded red doesn't work for me in the scruffy/cool class..
Sumpcrackers car made me reconsider these which i'd always dismissed due to the 4 pot power, nearly bought both a Turbo and an S2 at several points, but wussed out both times...
Looking forward to updates..

I do like the 944, but don't know much about them. It's in the shadow of the 911, but I like underdogs. Tidy 944's have a real air of class about them. It'll be good to see what you do with this. neither did i before buying it, i know now to do more research before buying another.. i've always wanted an early 911, but to me the 944 sums up the 80's especially with the teledials or cutters on.. Looking forward to updates.. wasnt your 911 faded lol the 4 pot power surprised me, pulls very well, feels a lot more powerful than vw's 6 pot 2.8 too... as to the roof, gonna let things get sorted first, then maybe some paint at a later date, much later... summers coming too, we should get back onto doing the reading (woolhampton) meets again... what you think?

she don't look too bad............? This thread has got me thinking though, just been rebrowsing ebay looking for 944's still keep coming back to the same problems, to get over 200bhp I need an S2 but then it's not much over 200bhp from 3.0 or a turbo but nice 944 turbos are only a couple of grand shy of a cheap 911... that rear quarter shot of your 944 really looks the nuts though, it's a great shape and you cant beat pop up headlamps! Re the meet yeah we should probably get on with it, i'm not in anything particulary retro but i suppose the e36 'vert is just about acceptable, should be getting two more real retros in the near future so should be ok on that front!

It looks nice, but as said, id paint the roof red. (nice bonus on the non sunroof)
I read the whole lot and see your thinking about wether or not to put money in it, and also wether to do work yourself on the car, heres my 2p-
Last year you could get a nice 944 oval dash for £1200 and a turbo for under 3k, most oval dash cars sit about 3k now and nice turbos are 5-7k. My point, they are finaly finding value, one of the last popular 80s germans to go up in price. I think the reason is the rise in 911 prices has pushed many into 944s If you do it all right now (belts, clutch , paint and make it pretty i expect you will break even when your done with it, maybe make a bit. I'm not just flapping, i am a car dealer and I'm seeing this happen.
As for the work, i would have a go yourself. There is nothing scary, just akward. If you do it once you know how to do it if needed again and its nice to know your car and that you can fix anything on it- thats where cheap motoring comes in. Let me know if you need any parts.

I'll dig out the thread and get something up for May then... probably a bit late now for this month Rear quarter is awesome, i love looking in the mirrors and seeing the wide arches - makes me smile every time.. It looks nice, but as said, id paint the roof red. Cheers for that mate... Ideally I'd love to have a go myself, but fear is to take something off, then spend forever putting it back, getting the hump and then sending off and paying for someone to do it.. I'm happy to have a go, but wish i had someone local who coudl lend a hand who knows what they are doing, would really help Either way, It's gonna go up on a ramp on monday (hopefuly) and have a good poke about underneath, if all's solid then we will get it done, as you say they are only going to go up in value and not being a fan of sunroofs I'm more than happy with it.. once all mechanically sorted I'll consider the paint, back to red all over, i'm just not a shiney lover tho... I know to some its not a true porsche - had a few comments along the lines - its no 911 is it, oh its just an audi.. I'm gona take them as jealousy comments now the way i see it, its my car, its my porsche and i love the shape, as said earlier, its the first thing to put a proper smile on my face in ages and gives a real nice feeling when i see it.. tempted to get a tacky sticker in the vectra, my other cars a porsche

Don't listen to all that 'not a Porsche' plums, there might be a smidge of truth in that for a 924 (even then it's limited to a few engine/mech parts) but a 944 is all Porsche as far as I'm concerned, eitherway it looks great bet it drives nice, and they're just jealous!
If you wanted to bring it over to the workshop on a day where i'm there all day I'm happy to offer advice, tea, tools and a helping hand to change the belts ect, never done one of those specifically but I cant see it being too taxing!

I know what your saying mate - see my first post, section about the 924.. 944 is defo all porsche in my books.. As to coming over the unit and tackling the work, that could be good, would rather give you some beer vouchers than someone i don't know... I'm off all next week too.. Might take you up the northway guys offer, they are only in beenham to stick it up on their ramps for a quick visual and get their honest opinion underneath... I'll give you a bell early next week then

Well today is D Day..
Been to Northway, stuck up on the ramps and had a poke about..
Underneath is clean, no real rot, other than a little non structural parts
Priced up for belts, slight oil leak, engine mount and a couple of service items..ok this was a porsche specialist place, but just after he picked me up off the floor, he then said plus VAT
now I could start it myself, take my time, but i think its way beyond me..
So a decision is to be made - sell it on or use it till it the MOT expires or belts snap and then break it.
Now i know that isnt the true RR spirit, i should rush out with spanners in hand and start doing it.. But i bought it on a whim and didnt think things through properly - Ok, i could sit and work through everything and probably learn a lot about the car, how to do stuff etc.. We all start somewhere... I've tinkered with enough and am at the point in my life where i don't really want a project..
So knowing what I'd get for a few parts and the plates value i could easily make my money breaking it when the time comes - or should i let someone else take it on, for someone else to take on I'd be wanting at least a grand back tho...
mmmm decisions.. enjoy it whilst it lasts, maybe get attached and then end up with a project, or end up hating it and breaking it or should I just move it on now and let it get sorted properly

Just have fun with it...if the belts go, you can still strip it to get your money back.
Slight oil leak shouldn't be a worry as long as you keep it topped up. I mean, what car that old hasn't got a slight oil leak?
Driver's side engine mount is a common problem....the price of the part isn't that much, but the man hours are huge as the engine has to come out and/or the sub frame dropped I think? Still a DIY job if you have the time.
Service items...easy and cheap enough for a Porsche.
I vote you keep it and enjoy it until it breaks :-)

I'd forget factoring in the 'value' of the plate. Dealers usually vastly overestimate the value to get you on their books, and you need to find a much more specific buyer than you would for, say, spare parts.
If the value of the parts only still make it worthwhile, then hang on and enjoy til it goes pop. Otherwise, get shot ASAP and find something that wont have your ringpiece twitching at every little noise.

Otherwise, get shot ASAP and find something that wont have your ringpiece twitching at every little noise. i don't really witch at noises, but Wendy wouldnt want to go anywhere in it, just in case we need bringing home ont he back of a lowloader.. to be honest,it could become an expensive piece of art.. i love looking at it.. i think sensible option is gumtree/ebay advert very similar to the one that i purchased it from, see if it fetches anything.. as to reg's i've sodl 3 in the past, all fetched more than offered, ive listed it with newreg at the mo for less than they said i;d get to see if it fetches anything i am tempted tho for the run it till bang, then get another engine - one on ebay for £149 at mo, then rebuild that up in spare time and drop in eventually, but i didnt really want a project and bought it on a whim..

I notice alot of 44 and 24 owners on this thread... That really should tell you something They're great cars... if I were you, Id drop it, rag it until something expensive pops then part it out to re-coop some (if not all) of your cash. What have you got to loose? ;D
