Hi all.
I've just out bid someone on eBay for a Haynes manual for my Dolly and won it for 6p.
Had an e-mail immediately after the auction from the guy that bid first saying 'Cheers Buddy!!!'
I'm quite puzzled about it. If he really wanted it that badly, he should have put a maximum bid on or refresh his page. So I looked on his profile, and he has won 4 in the last month!
Has this happened to anyone else or am I on my tobralone here?

meh, i won my bbs for £290 via bidding on them in the last 20 seconds of the auction.
if they were willing to spend more for them they should have entered a higher max bid.
you snooze you lose is the way i look at it ;D

Last minute (or second!) bidding works, decide what your maximum bid is and bosh it in at the last moment...if everyone does the same then it's fair. I sometimes put a low early bid in to register my interest - it also means that mr.upset-cos-you-outbid-him wouldn't have anything to moan about!
edit: Just had a look, not only has he already bought several, he actually bought one from the Netherlands which ended up costing him sixteen euros!

There are some proper freaks out there at the moment, having had two items on ebay recently it's reminded me of just how out of whack some peoples views can be.

I never bid on anything until insude the last 30 seconds, less if I can get away with it. And if I'm not around when the auction finishes, I use a Sniping program!

And if I'm not around when the auction finishes, I use a Sniping program! got my 2 cars using good ol sniping! that said i was the only person to meet the reserve with the mazda so it didnt make any difference. i don't understand why sniping is used so much. you still wont get the item if someones outbid you. i spose it does keep the price down though

I always go to confirm bid in last 30 secs of the auction, have pissedoff a few people like it, but the wouldn't they like to a) have the item & b) get it cheaply as possible.

i do the whole bidding in the last couple of seconds, the way i see it...if you bid 2 days before, someone can outbid you and push the price up and if you continue like that, you're gonna end up paying quite a bit. keep the cost down please

I had 2 Haynes manuals for Mini 1969on. I started the auctions at £1 each and cheekily put a buy it now price of £20 on each.
Imagine my shock and guilt when some guy from Canada bought both! £40 plus postage to Canada! Much Vodka was dipensed with that weekend!

Can you make any recommendations about which sniping program is best? I think I need to get one because I'm tired of getting outbid on stuff at the last minute.

I remember bidding for a CD player on eBay once, early on, before sniping programmes were used. There was like 1 bid on it, I put my bid in at like 4 seconds to go! I refreshed and I was outbid! I sent the guy an email congratulating him on his sniping skill. I was genuinely impressed.

I usually snipe. And sometimes someone out-snipes me. But that's good 'cos it stops me ending up with loads of stuff that I don't need / have space for.
That bloke's being a bit bizarre with his "cheers buddy" remark. How wierd...

While occasionally mildly frustrating I genuinely don't mind being outbid just before the end of an auction because, having previously decided how much I'm willing to pay, it means someone was willing to pay more than me. If they'd have stuck their bid in with hours to go wouldn't have made any difference.
