I'm going through this process at the mo with the Avenger. I had to supply a letter from an appropriate owners club to the customer services section of the DVLA. I sent mine off 4 weeks ago and no reply yet Not much help, sorry.

2 things to try, 1: your local main vw stealership has this info on etka, they can narrow its build date to a month iirc ,wheter or not they would write you a letter is another matter 2:vw uk try calling 01908 679121 (customer services)

On the V5, when does it state the vehicle being registered? If it's pre 73 (i.e. 31st/12th/1972) then it qualifies for historic vehicle status anyway To get re-registered as historic status you have to take a valid MOT, V5 and insurance certificate to your local DVLA office (which you can find on the DVLA website) and they will re-issue the vehicle as historic there and issue a new V5C, as well as giving you a tax disc on the spot. There may or may not be a small charge incurred at this point, I didn't have to Oh and get there at least 10 minutes before it opens, as to avoid any horrible ques! This is the only way of doing it and it's a little known fact. Do NOT send anything to Swansea, unless it IS your local office I went through all these hoops a while back myself, only after some serious investigation did I find out what I actually had to do....it's so rare to have it come up these days that no-one knows what the procedure is (in the DVLA)

it was registered in 1973, but early on. I've run the chassis number past various VW websites and it comes back as built around October 1972 so it should be 'groovy'.
i've tried before with just a letter from an owners club but it wasn't official enough for the DVLA office I went to, they needed one from an accredited club or the manufacturer themselves.
Will try customer services and see where I get to.

You need to get a 'Birth Certificate' from Wolfsburg, thats how most other Dubbers with 'borderline' cars/buses have gone about it.

curse word, that sounds like it might take a while! oh well.... gives me chance to fettle the old girl before I start driving her.
i had a 1303 before, registered 6th March 1973. Thought i'd be in luck, but when I checked that one out it was built on the 10th January.... and there's no grace period, if it's after midnight on 31st Dec 1972 you've shot it!
