two questions.
first, ive just managed to track down some brass freeze plugs for my Y-block (same size as BBC, handy!) to replace the missing/corroded steel ones, but there is no sealant with them. i know some people say install them dry, but it looks as those theres been issues with one of these in the past, and i don't want to take any chances, as I'm paranoid about core plugs leaking.
in the past ive just bought a kit and used whatever goop came with it. ive checked a few online sources, and they recommend using a wipe of blue hylomar to install them to make sure they seal, which just seems wrong to me as its a non-setting sealant? is this right, and if not what do you recommend. the stuff ive used in the past is nasty smelling brown stuff that looks like that old glue made out of horses, but i don't know what its called.
also, theres a fair bit of rust/scale buildup within the waterways of the motor, to be expected of a 60 year old all iron- v8 thats been a bit neglected really. the rad ive had made is essentally brand new, so i don't want to silt it all up with all the curse word out of the block- as ive got the core plugs out ive gone in with a pick/scraper and removed as much as i can get to from all the waterways as recommended by various Y-block gurus. id don't have the time or money at the minute to strip it and get it tanked before it goes in, but i want it as clean as possible. ive heard of acid washes to clean out the curse word, do these work, and do i risk damaging anything by doing it?
