Ive found a really nice Audi 100 estate fitted with the 2.0 manual petrol engine. Its got high milage, nearly 200k and as i do at least 200 miles aweek i was thinking of maybe a 1.9tdi conversion. Anyone know if thats possible at all and if so how difficult it would be? Also would the tdi run on veggie or is that a no no? Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

veg oil compatibility is purely down to the pump fitted to the derv engine - not the engine itself. If you get one with a VE mechanical Bosch pump, or the VP37 pump (lower half is basically a VE) then it'll run happily on SVO. As for fitting, you'll have to see if the bellhousing bolt pattern is the same for your petrol, as the derv engine you're hoping to fit. But don't forget that dervs won't rev as high as a petrol, so you may need to swap the gearbox out for a diesel spec one anyway If there's a deisel spec Audi 100, try to grab as much of the parts as you can (mounts/etc) as it would make your life immeasureably easier! It's not an old 100E is it?

I was sort of thinking of grabbing a full crash damaged donor and fitting the full lot-engine and box. Thanks for the advice, its a 1990 c3.Wanted one for ages but its took til now to find a good one.

The only issues I could think of would be the wiring, which should be fairly strait forward on an early TDI lump, and the change from 5 to 4 cylinder if you went for the 1.9.
The most obvious donor for a 1.9 would be an 80 tdi, and I believe the radiators are completely different, as they're mounted beside the engine on the nearside on the 5 pot cars, but in the normal place up front on 4 pots, I don't know how easily the 80 rad would fit in the 100. I believe the gearboxes would be different fittings, but the 80 one should go strait in, and I'm also unsure if the engine mounts would be the same between the 80 and the 100.
So you may need the engine and box from an 80, and then a few of the ancillaries (mounts, radiator ect.) from a 1.8 4 cylinder 100.
That said, I'm just speculating, so those are educated guesses at possible issues, not things you'll definitely need to do, it may all bolt strait in no problem.

Have a look on the TdiClub forums, there's a sub section for engine transplants. Most of them are using newer engines aswell.
