Hi all, I'm looking to get a new axle/diff in my Cortina, as I think mines about to expire, and Ive found two Atlas types which are stronger(and also belive you can get an LSD kit for them). Question is, ones a 3.75 ratio, and the other one is a 3.44, so what difference is this likely to make to the drive of my car?Cant get my head round this sorta thing annoyingly, maybe one day it'll click.I suppose one will give better acceleration, lower top speed, and the other way round for the other? What 'Diff'erence will this make! ;D(curse word joke) Thanks again Car's running a basically standard 2.0 pinto and type 9 five speed.

With diffs, the higher the number the lower the gearing - 3.75 will give you faster acceleration and 3.44 more top speed. 3.44 would be the standard ratio for a 2.0 cortina.
In practice I find that it makes little or no difference to the way the car drives though, both axles feel pretty much the same.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

the 3.75 will give better acceleration but the 3.44 may not necersseraly give you higher top speed. if you don't have the power band in the correct area then the engine will not pull the higher gearing over the wind resistance. what it will give you though is a lower rpm cruising speed.

I would go for a 3.75 with a 2.0 and 5 speed Personly I don't like the 3.44 unless you running at least a 2.8, it killed the 2.3 (3.44 was fitted to the 2.3 on the Mk4/5) BUT it really comes into it's own on motorways where it was the only saving grace on the 2.3 cos it give good MPG) I allways run a 3.75 with a 5 speed as IME and IMHO it's the best setup for around the 100 BHP/100Lbs engine. Having said that 3.44 is standard for Mk3 cortina 2.0 and capri 2.0 and they seem to get along with them ok TBH if you get one off that ad I posted in your wanted section Colin knows his cortinas and will steer you straight

I had a 3.44 in my 24v Cortina and it hit the redline in 5th at 130mph on 13" rims.

If I've done my calculations right then with a type 9 (and standard 185/70/13 wheels and tyres) you should see just over 24mph per 1000rpm with the 3.44 and 22mph with the 3.75.
Remember the type 9 has an overdrive 5th 0.82:1 so you'll get much lower revs than a standard Cortina on a 4 speed (which gives around 20mph per 1000rpm on a 3.44 for comparison to the above)
Really depends what you want to use your car for. If you want a motorway cruiser and don't mind having to change gear to get moving then think about the 3.44. Personally I'd say you'd need to add some torque with a type 9 and a 3.44 but up to you

fostek.co.uk/Can sort you out, not especially local, but very reliable and what they don't know about Ford axles isnt worth knowing.
