In a moment of madness, I've brought yet another Opel home! I really had to sweet talk my better half into letting be get it but she gave in in the end! ;-) Anyway, here it is.... She's a bit scruffy around the ears but it's a really straight car that looks to have been very well cared for through it's life. It's a 1.4 Expression with 113k miles on the clock. The engine is spot on and mechanically it seems very good. The engine bay is very clean! She needs a pair of sills and some small repairs to the boot floor but nothing too serious. I won't be doing much with it for the time being but i'm torn between keeping it standard and fitting a Belmont SRi front and rear bumper and SRi interior. Decisions decisions! I gave her a quick wash today to get rid of some of the moss growing on it and it scrubbed up really well!

I love these have a big soft spot for them owned a 87 1.8 glx 89 1.8 gli and a 90 2.0 cd all completely bulletproof the smallest motor available here was a 1.6, the hatchback was labelled as a kadett and the saloon as a monza . Parts were never a problem as all opel parts are interchangable my 2.0 CD had doorlocks and ignition barrel from corsa winow winders from 2005 Astra and indicator stalks from 2005 Astra. Windows were cheap as well (it was broken into often) the opel ones were expensive so replaced them from Daewoo Cielo. It was a favourite to replace the front wings bonnet and headlights from a cielo and slightly modify the opel bumper to fit back on as they're not expensive about 80pounds a lot of the parts aftermarket are still stoked check out www.autostyle.co.za they have some of the most wicked sports bumpers.

That has cleaned up really nice mate. After just looking and reading about your superb Kadett GSi replica I think I'd be tempted to keep this one fairly standard. Maybe a set of period factory Opel alloys and a small drop? Keep up the good work.

Cheers guys! I reckon I'll keep her standard-ish alright. A small drop on a set of 15" cavalier fanblades would be nice alright! I'll sort the welding first though!

Time for a long overdue update on this. I managed to spend a few evenings at it recently and made a bit of progress. I decided to have a go at cleaning up the bonnet using some wet and dry followed by a good polish..... In the end it didn't turn out too bad... I replaced the rotten headlamps with brand new pattern items. While I was at it I gave the front panel a good clean which it needed badly... The new lights take years off it! :-) I replaced a broken rear exhaust mount after removing the towbar..... The interior had already been stripped so I removed everything from inside to see what condition the floor was in. All in all it's not bad apart from a dodgy bit of welding behind the drivers seat and two bad spots in the usual trouble spots in the front footwell. I've started on the repairs in the footwell so that I can get the interior back into it. More pics to follow!

fairly certain it was only called belmont in the uk. bit of a fad really like orion, jetta etc
excellent progress matey. what do you think those bizarre marks were on the bonnet, almost look like a shadow of an old fashioned 35mm film reel

Correct Captainmcawsome! In the UK these were sold as the Astra Belmont. They were a lot more popular in Ireland than the UK for some reason. Actually I think Ireland was the only country in Europe to get the Astra H in salloon/sedan form. It wasn't sold in the UK. darrenh - the pattern on the bonnet was left behind after some genius decided to use the bonnet as a bench to spray a set of wheel trims! It took a fair bit of scrubbing but worth it in the end. I haven't done much more with it over the past couple of weeks as I've been busy trying to tidy up the shed. It's been slowly filling up with curse word so it was time to sort it out.

lol!
my advice is procede with caution in those foot wells. its easy to just plate the holes over, but behild the hole is the return lip for lower bulkhead, and rear wishbone mount

the belmont is same length as the estate version, nearly 10 inches longer than the hatchback, so gte bumpers don't fit but they did a 2.0 16v gte version of the belmont in south africa called (confusingly) opel monza.

Actually I think Ireland was the only country in Europe to get the Astra H in salloon/sedan form. It wasn't sold in the UK. The Astra H Sedan was sold in Finland as well, traditionally sedan models sell quite well over here, the Volkswagen Jetta and the Toyota Corolla are still very popular. Your Kadett looks very nice, there were a lot of those around in the days, now almost all of them have rotted away, which is a shame.
