I bought this little car a year ago sight unseen and have finally managed to get it home today. I must say I am impressed with just how solid she is although distinctly less impressed with the standard of work that has been done so far in fact most of it will need to be redone. That however is all in the future as whats there is strong and solid just not pretty and I need this car on the road fast! She is thankfully complete and has come with a fair few rare spares. She has a what looks like a new bootlid fitted. The engine turns over by hand but does not start due to a flat battery which annoyingly is 6V so I need a new battery charger and the clutch drum turns freely. When she arrived she did not want to leave the car transporter due to binding brakes. As the pedal also drops straight to the floor this will be the first port of call. Hopefully just some new seals and away we go. Other than that I really can't see much to stop her from returning to the road. So watch this space as I hope to have her up and running in 2 weeks. p.s. if anyone in west wales wants to come and play cars you are of course welcome. The interior is execelent.

work has carried on today despite the rain so I am now rather wet. But it has been worth it. My local motorfactors was open for 2 hours today so I popped in and picked up a 6v battery charger. After 4 hours on charge I hooked the battery up and she turned over but not fast enough to have a hope of starting. So the battery is on a very slow regenerative charge over night. Putting the battery on allowed me to refit her rear light clusters and suss out what wire goes where as a result she now has working sidelights and indicators. Can't yet say whether the brake lights are working as the switch runs off the master cylinder rather than the brake pedal and there is no pedal pressure. Wipers are working as are dip and full beam. One front side light is out. I refitted her bumpers irons on the front and she now has her bumper and I must say she looks a lot better for it. I think is safe to say there has been an improvement today.

WOW!
That's a very rare 1st type (mk1) DAF 44, even in Holland (where they were originally manufactured) a very rare piece! Headlights and chrome rings are a tinybit smaller than 2nd type (mk2) DAF 44 headlights. Very rare car, please be carefull with it!
Have fun!

I will be carefull.
What makes it even rarer still is that it is a right hand drive original UK model. As far as I know one of two left and the other one has a few things that don't quite ring true for instance the larger headlights, the later spare wheel mount, and the later type dashboard. This one was rescued from the crusher as it was scrapped luckily the scrapyard had not applied for a certificate of destruction so it can be returned to the world.

Yes they have the UK DAF owners club have managed to get a company to start making them and at the moment are the sole supplier of new belts. The funny thing is Volvo who own DAF have to buy belts for 300 varios of the DAF owners club.

Looking good, great little cars these, went for a spin in an RR one (Paul, used to be on here, haven't seen him for a while) and it was a laugh a minute Tail out action on a wet roundabout in Bristol was an experience ;D Whats the interior like?

Yep thats me and you went in my old one. A mark 3 44, with slightly less grunt than this one due to its emissions control curse word. Even so it was still fun kicking the tail out on that roundabout. Tail out with 34hp I hadn't thought it was possible until I floored it round that roundabout. If I remember rightly she wasn't running too well either as she had a manifold leak. Interior on this is subtly different. Seats are in imaculate red leatherette and she has a different dashboard, steering wheel and switchgear. Some pics of Sophie's interior.

Oww. Arrived at the car today to find the drivers footwell full of water. This was due to a badly fitted window that wouldn't close properly or open. The reason for this was soon discovered in that the winder mechanism had been fitted by a chimpanzee and just couldn't work it was upside down and out of line. Getting the mechanism out with the window in place was not easy but I couldn't remove the window as it was jammed up by the winder mechanism. eventually I got both out and set about fitting them properly. It was at this point I discovered that the mechanism was not even the right one for the door on the car and the mounting holes where in the wrong place. Luckily the car came with a spare door with a smashed window. But this had the wrong mechanism for the glass. In the end I managed to get the first mechanism and glass to fit in the second door as thankfully the mounting holes all lined up. The difference between the two mechanisms was one used rollers along the bottom of the glass and the other bolts to a metal plate bonded to the bottom of the glass, the latter of the two is the one I have used and thankfully the window now works. Bonus to this is that the door it fitted too is the right colour so no more orange door Sorry no photos today the air was a little bit too blue.

More progress today the door has been changed so she no longer has an orange door. In fitting it I discovered why it had been changed. The frame was distorted to the point that with the door latched shut there was 1/2 an inch gap between the window frame and the door roof. Nothing a little bit of brute force and a hammer couldn't fix. It looked like at some point someone had locked the keys inside and bent the door frame in order to gain access. I also set about putting a latch on the door. I did take several photos but your going to have to wait, as I left the camera on the back seat of the car and I'm not feeling particully inclined to do a 22 mile round trip to pick it up ;D

Right oh photos from the last lot of work. Bye bye ugly orange door. This was easy to achieve. Seperate the hing halves by drifting out the pivot pins. Back on goes the original door and now I can see why it was changed theres a sizeable gap at the top of the frame. Oh dear that is not going to be water tight but I'm not going to be defeated that easily. Ah thats where the bend is how did I not notice that earlier? Out come my good friends the hammer and the ratchet straps and 5 minutes later. Much better all though not 100% yet
