I bought one of those hand-held spray guns from an autojumble ages ago but haven't used it yet. A bit like one of these: www.machinemart.co.uk/product.asp?p=000410045What paint can I use through it? I know some types aren't suitable due to fumes and sparks not mixing very well! I'm not after a good finish just something to see me through the winter. I don't want my bug to fall apart after I have spent so long welding it back together. I'm thinking NATO or truck enamel at the moment, anything as long as it's cheap.

That one says not suitable for cellulose paint. I'd take that as meaning not suitable for any solvent based paint.
That type are great for getting creocote all up your arm! Make sure its not windy the day you do the fense!
I used an Appollo HVLP electric sprayer recently and it was absolute cack with 2K although it was passable with cellulose. Not great though. £69.99 from argos. I use it for doing household painting really.

Just found the instructions for mine. Apparently it can spray cellulose, enamel in fact anything if their blurb is to be believed. Somehow I don't believe them. I got it mainly for spraying wax underseal which I have yet to do. I've got a bit of enamel paint so I think I'll give it a go on a scrap piece of tin. I'll let you know how I get on!

Are they really any good at all for car work? For £15 I'm tempted to get one anyway, if it's pap I'll paint the living room instead with it I'm going to have to spray a car soon, don't want a show-winning finish but just needs to be more all-the-same-colour kind of thing. I know compressors are cheap to hire but then you have to buy spray guns, and it's the fetching/delivering of the compressor etc etc etc.

I used to sell the likes of those. Best for solvent based architectural coatings. Tend to wear out quickly with latex. I wouldn't use one for automotive or anything that requires a fine finish. Too much overspray.

Well, just had a go. Not a bad finish really. Ok its not as good as a compressor but good coverage and a lot quicker/better than a brush. Mine was £7 from an autojumble and is verging on antique but worked well with enamel. Also probably the loudest hand held piece of equipment I have ever used. Should be good with primer or matt black. I'll try to get a photo tomorrow unless all the paint has fallen off!
If you are near a Roys store then they had them in there for under a £10 last time I went in.

Paint seems to have dried ok. Lots of orange peel and dust/spiders stuck in it but otherwise ok. The panel was prepared by leaving outside for about a year and then giving it a quick wipe over with thinners. The paint was jenolite enamel, an old half used tin (at least 2 years old). I think I thinned it a bit too much as it ran a bit. Not sure if I'll use it to do the car, depends on whether I can get access to a compressor or just brush paint (however the mood takes me!). I'm a long way off painting yet still loads more welding to do.

don't do it..... Seriously I could get a better finish that that with a Brush and roller Chap I share a garage with painted his bug with one...... 3 times to try and get a finish then spent months Flatting it all down and t-cutting it He gave up in the end and paid out about £800 to get it "Sorted" by a "proffesional"....... still looks sh1te and he hasnt driven it much since I painted one side of my Kadett with 2K aerosol cans, outside in the street and it doesnt look bad at all There are much better ways of getting a decent finish than with one of those:

Including 'Miss Roy'? Anyhow - think i'll go and pick one up just to spray primer on the car, probably won't use it for final finish but then again that's a few months off and i have two rooms to paint in the house too.... can i just use primer straight into it or will i need to thin it?

i thinned mine 10% but the finish was rubbish - i could have spit it out of a straw and got a better finish
second hand 50 litre compressor and half decent gun only costs around 60 quid - why spoil the finish?

Just been looking around at hiring a compressor actually, place near me does a 'spray pack' with compressor, gun, airline and the paint tin thing for £70 over a weekend. probably not long enough to do a full repspray but can rattlecan the primer on first and do the prep before hiring.

........place near me does a 'spray pack' with compressor, gun, airline and the paint tin thing for £70 over a weekend......... Thats got me thinking. For that sort of cash you can buy one of the HVLP turbines with a gun. Anyone used one for car work? Are they as cr*p as you'd expect at that price?

Thats what I used. A HVLP turbine thing from Apollo. Not exactly pleased with the result!

Roys still own wroxham but I have yet to visit there. Dereham is the nearest store to me, they still stock a mix of good and pretty useless tools though! www.roys.co.uk/The finish on my test panel is defineately not up to a good enough standard for a final coat but then I did no prep work other than a quick wipe down. The paint was also pretty dodgy as it had been sat for a long time and seperated. Primer would need thinning, I think. I did the enamel at 2.5 parts paint to 1 part thinner which was a bit thin. I'll probably have another go with a sheet of bare metal and try with primer then top coat. I'm not after a show winning finish just some good coats to protect the metal. With enough practice the finish should be passable (I'm going for matt black and primer for the final job). Its never going to match a pro job but then I would need to practice with a compressor for a while to get a good finish . That would mean a long hire as I have no where to store a compressor if I bought one. At least I now know the gun works anyway!
